Five Outside Contenders For 2019 Masters

April 9, 2019

The Masters is arguably the most prestigious event on the golfing calendar as players from around the world descend upon the Augusta National Golf Club to compete for the Green Jacket.

Augusta is one of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour and provides the ultimate test of a golfer’s quality and character under pressure. It has broken the best players in the world as the stress of the final day has resulted in catastrophic meltdowns.

Players that are out of the spotlight can thrive without the burden of expectations. Danny Willett capitalised on Jordan Spieth’s collapse in 2016 to claim the Green Jacket. There have been other outsiders to have won the event, flying under the radar to achieve the ultimate success. We’ll now break down five players that could rise to the top in the 2019 Masters.

Kevin Kisner

Kisner can build off his WGC Matchplay win

Kisner made a breakthrough in his career by defeating Matt Kuchar to claim the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play title. The American claimed his first World Golf Championship event as he atoned for his defeat in the final of last year’s event when he was hammered by Bubba Watson. The 35-year-old had been a solid operator on the tour in strokeplay this term, although his best finish came in the RSM Classic when he placed in tied-seventh in November 2018.

Kisner finished tied-second at The Open last year after holding the lead for the opening three rounds. He was made to rue a poor final round, dropping three strokes to allow Francesco Molinari to take the Claret Jug. The American has made the cut in his three previous appearances at The Masters and will not be deterred by the Augusta course. Kisner could rise the crest of a wave from his matchplay crown to claim the Green Jacket at odds of 67.00Bet €100 to win €670066/1Bet £100 to win £6700+6600Bet $100 to win $670066.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$670066.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp6700-0.0152Bet RM100 to win RM6700  with Bet365.

Patrick Cantlay

After overcoming a spate of injuries that derailed the early stages of his career, Cantlay has been on the rise on the PGA Tour. He won his maiden event in November 2017 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, defeating Alex Cejka and Kim Meen-whee to take the crown. Cantlay finished second in the defence of his crown, earning one of four top-10 finishes he has mustered over the course of the campaign. The 27-year-old put himself into contention at the Mexico Championship with impressive performances on the second and third day of the competition.

However, he could not match the pace of Dustin Johnson on the final round and settled for tied-sixth. Cantlay missed the cut at The Players Championship and failed to emerge from the group stage at the WGC Matchplay. However, he has undoubted quality and his experience at Augusta last season will stand him in good stead, despite failing to make the weekend. Cantlay could be the player to emerge out of nowhere in the competition and at odds of 71.00Bet €100 to win €710070/1Bet £100 to win £7100+7000Bet $100 to win $710070.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$710070.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp7100-0.0143Bet RM100 to win RM7100  with BetVictor he has good value to take the Green Jacket.

Tony Finau

Finau played through the pain last year

Finau hit the headlines this time last year for dislocating his ankle on the eve of the tournament after celebrating a hole in one in the par-three competition. The American still managed to compete in The Masters and he fared well, finishing in the top 10 despite his ailment. Finau also finished fifth in the US Open along with a tied-ninth placing at The Open. He also made the cut at the PGA Championship, although he was unable to mount a charge for the crown.

Finau ended last year in good form, placing second in the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions and again at the Hero World Challenge. His form since the turn of the year has taken a slight dip, although he has remained in the majority of the events until the final day. Finau could be one of those players that raises the standard of their performances at the majors. Therefore backing him at odds of 41.00Bet €100 to win €410040/1Bet £100 to win £4100+4000Bet $100 to win $410040.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$410040.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp4100-0.0250Bet RM100 to win RM4100  with Bet365 could be a solid option.

Matthew Fitzpatrick

The 24-year-old made an impression on his second appearance at The Masters in 2016. He was composed at Augusta where players with greater experience had been bested by the rigours of the course.  On that occasion he finished on even-par in tied-seventh where scoring was tough to say the least as Willett won the event on five-under. Since then Fitzpatrick has been unable to make an impact at the majors, producing his next placing at the US Open last year when he finished tied-12th.

The Englishman missed the cut at The Open and the PGA Championship, although he notch a victory on the European Tour, defending his crown at the Omega European Masters in a playoff. Fitzpatrick operated near the peak of his powers to finish second at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March, ending the tournament 10-under – two strokes off the pace of Francesco Molinari. However, the 24-year-old did not have the special round in him to close out the crown. He may have learned from that experience and at odds of 101.00Bet €100 to win €10100100/1Bet £100 to win £10100+10000Bet $100 to win $10100100.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$10100100.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp10100-0.0100Bet RM100 to win RM10100  with Bet365 he does have hope as an outsider.

Eddie Pepperell

Will Pepperell shine on his Masters bow?

Pepperell will make his first appearance at The Masters, and will face a challenge coming to terms with Augusta. However, he does have a fearless approach to the game and will not be deterred by the tricky greens that the course has to offer. Pepperell finished tied-sixth at The Open last year and does appear to have an appetite for the grand stage. He notched two victories on the European Tour last term and has built on his momentum to impress in the United States.

The Englishman made the cut at the Mexico Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He produced a fine effort at The Players Championship, placing in tied-third, finishing only two strokes behind Rory McIlroy. Pepperell produced a six-under round of 66 on the final day, highlighting his credentials for The Masters. Whether it’s enough to spring a surprise for the Green Jacket is another matter, but at 151.00Bet €100 to win €15100150/1Bet £100 to win £15100+15000Bet $100 to win $15100150.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$15100150.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp15100-0.0067Bet RM100 to win RM15100  with 888Sport he has good value for the win.
