Five Outside Contenders For 2019 Masters

The Masters is arguably the most prestigious event on the golfing calendar as players from around the world descend upon the Augusta National Golf Club to compete for the Green Jacket.

Kevin Kisner

Kisner made a breakthrough in his career by defeating Matt Kuchar to claim the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play title. The American claimed his first World Golf Championship event as he atoned for his defeat in the final of last year’s event when he was hammered by Bubba Watson. The 35-year-old had been a solid operator on the tour in strokeplay this term, although his best finish came in the RSM Classic when he placed in tied-seventh in November 2018.

Patrick Cantlay

After overcoming a spate of injuries that derailed the early stages of his career, Cantlay has been on the rise on the PGA Tour. He won his maiden event in November 2017 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, defeating Alex Cejka and Kim Meen-whee to take the crown. Cantlay finished second in the defence of his crown, earning one of four top-10 finishes he has mustered over the course of the campaign. The 27-year-old put himself into contention at the Mexico Championship with impressive performances on the second and third day of the competition.

However, he could not match the pace of Dustin Johnson on the final round and settled for tied-sixth. Cantlay missed the cut at The Players Championship and failed to emerge from the group stage at the WGC Matchplay. However, he has undoubted quality and his experience at Augusta last season will stand him in good stead, despite failing to make the weekend. Tony Finau

Finau hit the headlines this time last year for dislocating his ankle on the eve of the tournament after celebrating a hole in one in the par-three competition. The American still managed to compete in The Masters and he fared well, finishing in the top 10 despite his ailment. Finau also finished fifth in the US Open along with a tied-ninth placing at The Open. He also made the cut at the PGA Championship, although he was unable to mount a charge for the crown.

Finau ended last year in good form, placing second in the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions and again at the Hero World Challenge. His form since the turn of the year has taken a slight dip, although he has remained in the majority of the events until the final day. Finau could be one of those players that raises the standard of their performances at the majors. Matthew Fitzpatrick

The 24-year-old made an impression on his second appearance at The Masters in 2016. Pepperell will make his first appearance at The Masters, and will face a challenge coming to terms with Augusta.
