Top Five US Open Contenders

Brooks Koepka will aim to become only the second man in the history of the US Open to win three consecutive crowns when the tournament begins at Pebble Beach on Thursday.

Koepka secured the fourth major of his career with a brilliant performance to win the PGA Championship. The American was dominant for the opening three days of the competition, and although he had a slight wobble on the final round, the 29-year-old closed out the victory two strokes ahead of Dustin Johnson.

He will now aim to clinch his second major of the season and take a stride towards the calendar slam by retaining the US Open. Last year, Koepka was involved in a showdown with Johnson for the crown, but had enough to see off his competition on the final day. Rory McIlroy

The Northern Irishman laid down his credentials with a fine performance at the Canadian Open to take the crown. McIlroy was on pace for a final round of 59 in Hamilton, but he notched a bogey rather than a birdie on the 18^th hole, missing out on the milestone. He still carded a nine-under round to claim the victory, handing him momentum for the US Open. The tournament was the first of McIlroy’s first major wins back in 2011 when he triumphed at Bethesda.

However, he has struggled in recent years, missing the cut in the last three competitions. McIlroy has not managed to add to his tally of four major crowns since winning the PGA Championship in 2014. Tiger Woods

Woods returned to the peak of the majors by winning The Masters in April. However, last month he was off the pace at the PGA Championship, failing to make the cut for the final two days of the tournament. Dustin Johnson

Johnson remains the nearly man at the majors, finishing second once again at the PGA Championship. He wasn’t quite good enough to match the pace of Koepka in the opening three rounds. The American carded a one-under round of 69 on the final day, but his rival just had enough to edge the competition by two strokes.

It was the same story at The Masters when Johnson finished second, failing to match the pace of Woods at the top of the leaderboard. The form of the 34-year-old has been encouraging and he backed up his efforts at the majors with a solid performance at the Canadian Open.

Patrick Cantlay

Cantlay has developed into a quality player and is in peak form ahead of the tournament. He proved his quality with a brilliant performance to win his first PGA Tour event of the campaign at the Memorial Tournament. The American blew away the rest of the field by finishing 19-under for the tournament aided by finishing eight strokes under on his final round.In his last four competitions, he has finished in the top-10. This run has included a ninth-place finish at The Masters and a third-place finish at the PGA Championship.

The 27-year-old has the momentum to take into the US Open and does not seem fazed by the big occasion. Cantlay has the ability to take the next step in his career to earn his first major. Given his form, he could be the one to challenge Koepka at the top of the leaderboard on the final day.
