Most Previous Winners Represented the Champions

Officially introduced at Euro 1996, the European Championship player of the year award has been won by some of the greatest footballers of all time. Here’s a list of who has won the award in the past:

  • Euro 1996 – Matthias Sammer (Germany, Defensive Midfielder)
  • Euro 2000 – Zinedine Zidane (France, Attacking Midfielder)
  • Euro 2004 – Theodoros Zagorakis (Greece, Central Midfielder)
  • Euro 2008 – Xavi (Spain, Central Midfielder)
  • Euro 2012 – Andrés Iniesta (Spain, Central Midfielder)
  • Euro 2016 – Antoine Griezmann (France, Forward)

The football historians amongst you may realise that winners between 1996 and 2012 represented the champions as well, a trend snapped by Antoine Griezmann in 2016 as he was crowned player of the tournament despite Portugal defeating France 1-0 after extra time.

You may also notice that only midfielders and attackers have won the award. Poor goalkeepers and defenders, huh? UEFA hailed Griezmann’s “quality finishing” when he was presented with the award in 2016, which suggests we should back a player with an attacking mindset.

Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament Favourites

Even the best betting sites can’t split Kylian Mbappé and Kevin De Bruyne in the Euro 2020 player of the tournament betting market. They are 9.00 joint-favourites to win the award, while England’s Harry Kane (13.00) is the third favourite. Let’s discuss each of their chances.

Kylian Mbappé (9.00)

If you’ve read our Euro 2020 betting guide, then you’ll know that France have been drawn in Group F, dubbed “the group of death” because it also features Germany, Portugal and Hungary. However, Les Bleus are the reigning world champions and they boast one of the hottest properties in world football: Kylian Mbappé.

The Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward enters the tournament in blistering form after scoring 27 goals in Ligue 1 and eight in the Champions League. Although PSG failed to win either competition, Mbappé is certain to start every match and he’ll determined to add the Euro 2020 player of the tournament award to his ever-growing trophy cabinet.

Kevin De Bruyne (9.00)

Although Kevin De Bruyne will miss Belgium’s opening match against Russia after suffering multiple fractures to his face during Manchester City’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League final, he has been included in the squad and will want to help Belgium win their first major tournament title.

Belgium have been drawn in Group B alongside Russia, Denmark and Finland. We expect the Red Devils to advance from their group, with De Bruyne racking up the assists by feeding the in-form Romelu Lukaku. In the 2019-20 season, he equalled Thierry Henry’s 17-year Premier League assist record by setting up 20 goals, and bookmakers expect him to create plenty of chances during Euro 2020.

Harry Kane (13.00)

England captain Harry Kane enters Euro 2020 in the form of his life. He ended the season as the Premier League’s top scorer, bagging 23 goals for a struggling Spurs side. The 27-year-old will be determined to rack up the goals and assists for England this summer as his transfer saga rumbles on.

Kane is no stranger to personal accolades, having scored six goals to be crowned top scorer at the last World Cup. He is also favourite to win the Golden Boot at Euro 2020, and it’s easy to see why with 34 goals in 53 caps for the Three Lions. Kane has also showcased his all-round game by recording 13 assists for Spurs this season, so he has a great chance of winning player of the tournament if England go deep.

Our Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament Predictions

Our hunt for value means we’re opposing the three favourites in the Euro 2020 player of the tournament betting market. Instead, we’re putting our faith in a previous winner, an emerging star and a Polish hitman.

Antoine Griezmann (21.00)

Antoine Griezmann slipped out of favour under Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman towards the end of the season, starting just one of their last four matches. France coach Didier Deschamps has backed the under-fire forward, stating that “it would be indecent to question his presence in the national team.”

Although Griezmann will be under pressure to perform with Mbappé firing on all cylinders, Karim Benzema included in the squad after a five-year absence and Olivier Giroud also featuring, he always seems to rise to the occasion. He won player of the tournament at Euro 2016 after helping France to reach the final, and he picked up FIFA’s Bronze Ball award and the Silver Boot as France lifted the 2018 World Cup.

Phil Foden (26.00)

Nominated for both the Professional Footballers’ Association men’s Players’ Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards, Phil Foden has been one of Manchester City’s star performers this season. The 21-year-old has become a first-choice pick on the wings ahead of Raheem Sterling and as a false nine, and we expect him to shine in this summer’s tournament.

With England drawn in Group D alongside Croatia, Scotland and Czech Republic, Foden will have lots of opportunities to score and rack up assists by creating chances for the likes of Harry Kane and Jadon Sancho. Although he would become the youngest player to win the award, he is the bookies’ favourite to be the young player of the tournament and we think he has a chance to win the main award.

Robert Lewandowski (34.00)

Despite his record-breaking form in the Bundesliga, odds of 34.00 suggest bookmakers don’t fancy Robert Lewandowski’s chances of being named player of the tournament. The Bayern Munich striker scored his 41st Bundesliga goal of the season in Bayern’s final match of the season to break Gerd Müller’s 49-year-old goal-scoring record.

Although Lewandowski is deadly in front of goal, his hopes of winning the award will rest on Poland going further into a Euros than they’ve ever managed before (they reached the quarter-finals at Euro 2016). Drawn in Group E alongside Spain, Sweden and Slovakia, Poland will hope experienced players such as Arkadiusz Milik and Piotr Zieliński create lots of scoring opportunities for Lewandowski.
