Wednesday to Win in Tuesday Championship Clash

April 3, 2016

Sheffield Wednesday have won their last three games.

On a night where all eyes will be on the big games in the Champions League, a full set of fixtures in the Championship offers excellent back up as betting ammunition. There are rich pickings to be had in England’s second tier, but in a league where anyone can beat anyone, there are also pitfalls to be avoided. We’ve picked through the games on Tuesday evening with a fine tooth comb to bring you our best tips for the night.

The title and relegation races took a step closer to conclusion on Saturday, but the picture became much clearer at the bottom than at the top. Fulham’s vital 2-1 home win over relegation-rivals MK Dons was a huge result for both teams. It took the Cottagers four points clear of the Dons, which coupled with Rotherham’s 2-1 defeat of Leeds has opened up a significant gap above Milton Keynes, Charlton and Bolton in the bottom three.

At the top of the table Brighton and Burnley played out a thrilling 2-2 draw to earn us a nice profit on the day, while Middlesbrough’s 3-2 victory over QPR on Friday night took them back into the top two. Hull broke their five game winless run with a 4-0 success over Bristol City, and Sheffield Wednesday cemented their place in the top six with their third win in a row at Huddersfield.

The Owls are the top pick on Tuesday as they host Blackburn, while our other tips both feature teams struggling at the foot of the table.

Sheffield Wednesday v Blackburn

Sheffield Wednesday are an attractive price at 2.05Bet €100 to win €20521/20Bet £100 to win £205+105Bet $100 to win $2051.05Bet HK$100 to win HK$2051.05Bet Rp100 to win Rp205-0.9524Bet RM100 to win RM205  with MarathonbetBetfair and William Hill to beat Blackburn Rovers when they visit Hillsborough.

The Owls have accrued 65 points this season and sit comfortably in 5th place in the league. An eight-point deficit on 2nd placed Middlesbrough is probably too much to make up to consider automatic promotion a realistic possibility, but they are on the cusp of securing a place in the end of season play-offs. The 1-0 win at Huddersfield followed successive 3-0 wins against Charlton and Notts Forest, and Wednesday have only conceded a single goal in the last six matches. With the two teams below them – Derby and Cardiff – facing tough games against Burnley and Hull on the same night, this represents an excellent opportunity for the Owls to grab more points and move further ahead of their rivals. They’ve only lost twice at home all season and have won 11 of 19 home games, including 7 of the last 10.

Blackburn had a mini-reprieve under Paul Lambert when he took over as manager, but the honeymoon period appears to be over as three defeats in four matches attests. The financial problems at the club have been well documented lately, but the priceless commodity of goals is what eludes the Lancashire side right now. They’ve only managed to score twice in the last five away trips, and they will find it even tougher against this miserly Wednesday defence. Only two clean sheets in ten games suggests that the Owls have a good chance of finding the net in this game, and one goal could easily be enough to win it.

Bristol City v Rotherham

Bristol City and Rotherham meet in a real six pointer at the bottom of the table, but it’s the visitors who look slightly overpriced. Rotherham or Draw double chance is quoted at 1.95Bet €100 to win €19519/20Bet £100 to win £195-105Bet $100 to win $1950.95Bet HK$100 to win HK$195-1.05Bet Rp100 to win Rp1950.9500Bet RM100 to win RM195  with Bet365, and that looks worth taking.

Neil Warnock has sparked a revolution at Rotherham since taking charge, and he’s led them five points clear of the relegation zone after a run of five wins and a draw in six games. The late winner against Leeds after both teams were reduced to ten men was, according the the boss, testament to his side’s fighting spirit and character. Those qualities will serve his team well if they are to survive and they are good value to get something from Ashton Gate.

City are just a point above Rotherham in the table after their own earlier impressive run took them clear of trouble, but they’ve lost three of the last five games and are by no means solid. They may have beaten Bolton 6-0 in the last home game, but the previous two were 2-0 and 4-0 defeats at the hands of Cardiff and Brighton. Saturday’s 4-0 loss away at Hull also exposed their defensive frailties, and with ten goals in their last six games the Millers are fancied to score in this game.

Rotherham have typically had a porous defence themselves this season, but Warnock has added a bit of steel and organisation and they’ve actually kept three clean sheets in the last six games during this purple patch. Victories against Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds and Ipswich are not to be sniffed at and the Millers are well worth backing to keep the unbeaten run going with at least a point.

Brentford v Bolton

Finally Brentford ended a four-game losing streak with a 3-0 win at Forest in Saturday and are fancied to continue the winning thread at home to woeful Bolton at 1.71Bet €100 to win €17171/100Bet £100 to win £171-141Bet $100 to win $1710.71Bet HK$100 to win HK$171-1.41Bet Rp100 to win Rp1710.7100Bet RM100 to win RM171  with Marathonbet

Not much more can really go wrong for Bolton right now, and they are still yet to win a game on their travels this season, with only four draws and fifteen defeats from 19 road trips. They’re rock bottom with 26 points, destined for League One, and are currently on a sequence of six defeats in seven matches. The 6-0 humiliation by Bristol City was followed by a 1-0 home defeat by Reading on Saturday, and this should prove to be another fruitless trip as they travel to London to face Brentford.

The Bees poor run of form was halted with the 3-0 away success at Forest, and although it’s been a very forgettable season, they won’t get many ‘easier’ home games for a long time. Boss Dean Smith says he has been pleased with performances even in defeat recently, and he will be eager for his side to build some momentum as they look to finish the season well.
