Italy Can Finish Euro Preparations With Finland Win

There’s a long fixture list of international games this weekend with the last few friendlies being played before the serious business of Euro 2016 next week. We’ve picked out way through the fixture list to find the best bets over the next few days as we look to build the coffers ahead of the start of the Euros next Friday.

Italy v Finland

Italy are the headline pick this weekend as they face a second home friendly in a week against Finland. The Italians dominated last Sunday’s international against Scotland in Malta, with the 1-0 scoreline barely representing the balance of play. Italy’s dominance could and probably should have resulted in more goals against a lacklustre Scottish side that offered little going forward.

It brought to an end a run of four games without a win for the Azzurri, and they’ll be expecting to continue with a professional approach in Verona as they sign off before the Euros start in earnest. Defeats to Belgium and Germany along with draws against Spain and Romania give an accurate impression of where Italy are as a football team right now. They may struggle to live with the very best at the tournament, but they still retain a level of quality that can see them dominate against sides like Scotland and Finland.

Australia v Greece

The Aussies will play a double-header against Greece, with the second game on Tuesday 7th, and back on home soil with a full-strength squad the Socceroos will be hard to beat. They put on an impressive display in the 2-1 defeat to England, and the likes of Cahill, Burns and Sainsbury return to bolster the line-up.

Greece failed to qualify for the Euros and this is not a vintage period for the national side. They’ve won just two of the last ten internationals – against Montenegro and Hungary – but they’ve also suffered humiliating defeats against the likes of Luxembourg and the Faroe Islands in that sequence.

Australia should have too much attacking prowess for Greece and at odds against they appeal as a fair bet.

France v Scotland

Defensive worries were highlighted again for the French in the 3-2 win over Cameroon – they’ve conceded two in each of the last four internationals – but their attacking quality was also on display. Scotland are unlikely to trouble the French excessively at the back however, and will do very well to limit a side that has scored 10 goals in the last three games. Gordon Strachan’s men missed out on the Euros after being grouped with Germany, Poland and Republic of Ireland in qualifying, and attention has already turned to World Cup qualifiers next season. Little will be expected from this game and France should record another home victory as they prepare to open the tournament next week.

Czech Republic v South Korea

Poland v Lithuania

After a strong qualifying campaign in which they narrowly came second to Germany, the Poles have been mentioned among the dark horse for Euro 2016. An experienced and workmanlike side is complimented by the quality of Bayern’s Lewandowski and young Ajax striker Milik.

Lithunia have been beaten to nil in three of the last five friendly internationals – against Romania, England and Russia. They managed a consolation goal in a 2-1 defeat to Latvia, and beat Estonia 2-0 in the Baltic Cup, but will always come up short against top level opposition.

Poland will expect a reaction after the surprise defeat to the Dutch, and it would be a big shock if they fail to win this comfortably. At odds against it’s worth backing them to do so while keeping a clean sheet in the process.
