Lawyer Makes Case For Success in Friday’s Racing

June 17, 2016

Lawyer has a strong chance at Redcar this afternoon.

David Barron is one of the shrewdest and most skilled trainers in the UK and he has a very well handicapped horse in the form of Lawyer. A winner last time out, the son of Acclamation is still particularly well treated on the back of his efforts last term. A winner at Ripon just 24 hours earlier, the 5 year old gelding appears to be in rude health, and should be able to go very close at Redcar if turning up. Odds of 5.0 are particularly appealing.

Lawyer’s success at Ripon over the mile definitely wasn’t a complete shock as the horse had put in some solid efforts since returning to turf this season. On his penultimate start, Barron’s runner went off a well-supported favourite over today’s course and distance. After being held up in rear, he did not enjoy the clearest passage through the race, but eventually finished a respectable third. The ground was on the fast side that day and being by Acclamation, it is likely he would have preferred it slightly less quick.  Carrying a 6lb penalty from the Ripon success puts Lawyer on a mark of 75, which is far from insurmountable based on his form from last season. The son of Acclamation managed to put up good showings off marks in the low 80’s, and he could be returning to that level this time around.

From stall 13, Lawyer is likely to sit in midfield and against some limited opposition, he really should take some beating.

Kevin Ryan sends just two horses down to Newmarket from North Yorkshire on Friday, and the first of those runners Briyouni looks to have an excellent chance of making amends for his odds on reversal last time out at Ripon. The horse was turned out quickly under a 6lb penalty after winning comfortably at Nottingham the time before, but he pulled hard and seemed unsuited by the track. The return to a more galloping course should see the son of Siyouni in a better light and odds of 5.0 seem generous.

Kevin Ryan’s 3 year old ran respectably in 3 racecourse appearances last year, without really setting the world alight. As a result, he was allotted a handicap mark of 69, which seemed more than fair. Ryan’s horses typically improve significantly from 2 to 3 and he started as a strong favourite at Nottingham on his fourth start. Travelled smoothly and won by a snug ¾ length. Was subsequently backed off the boards to follow up at Ripon, but everything went wrong and the horse wasn’t allowed to use his long stride to best effect. The Newmarket course might be undulating, but it is straight, and the little bit of ease in the ground is very likely to suit.
