Murray and Keys Value against Djokovic and Williams

June 26, 2016

Andy Murray represents good value at this year's Wimbledon.

Andy Murray and Madison Keys represent the value bets in The Championship singles tournaments, with Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams being opposable favourites at their odds.

Only four players have won The Championships men’s singles in the last 13 years – Djokovic, Murray, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Nadal withdrew from The Championships due to injury and Federer may struggle to win another major title having not tasted the ultimate success since he won at Wimbledon four years ago. The Championships men’s singles ought to boil down to either Djokovic and Murray and, in light of the market, one must put the Briton on top.

Murray trails Djokovic 10-24 in a professional series that dates back to October 2006, with the Briton only having won two of his 15 matches against the Serbian since the start of 2014. But grass, the surface on which The Championships take place, is a completely different animal and not only does Murray boast a 2-0 head-to-head lead over Djokovic on the green stuff but also the Briton is yet to drop a set to the Serbian on it. One finds it impossible to ignore the fact that Murray enjoys a 5-0 set advantage over Djokovic and that none of those five sets has gone beyond 7-5, either.

Yes, Djokovic is a better player than when he last faced Murray on grass three years ago but the Briton has rehired Ivan Lendl, the no-nonsense coach who was in his box when he won his two major titles plus the London 2012 Olympic Games. Djokovic is odds on to win The Championships whereas Murray is available at odds of 4.50Bet €100 to win €4507/2Bet £100 to win £450+350Bet $100 to win $4503.50Bet HK$100 to win HK$4503.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp450-0.2857Bet RM100 to win RM450  with SkyBet. The Leeds-based bookmaker can expect to do plenty of business on Murray.

Serena Williams is the obvious favourite for the women’s singles event in The Championships but she has not won any of the last three major tournaments and it is possible that she has not recovered mentally from failing to complete the 2015 grand slam when it appeared that no-one could stop her. Williams has won only two of the last five women’s singles at Wimbledon, not progressing past the fourth round in her three barren years. At almost 35 years of age, time may have just about caught up with the best female player ever and, therefore, one cannot suggest backing her at short odds.

Paddy Power is offering odds of 15.00Bet €100 to win €150014/1Bet £100 to win £1500+1400Bet $100 to win $150014.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$150014.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp1500-0.0714Bet RM100 to win RM1500  about Keys breaking through for her first major title and being more than twice the price of Garbine Muguruza means that one is siding with the American. Keys is built for grass-court tennis and the signs – she took out the recent grass event in Birmingham – are that she could be able to fulfil her potential. Keys, who is seeded ninth in The Championships women’s singles, is only 24-9 lifetime on grass but she is 17-3 on the green stuff since the beginning of the Eastbourne event in 2014 and that includes a retirement loss to Yaraslava Shvedova.

According to the latest WTA Tour statistics, Keys ranked 10th for aces, eighth for first-serve points won percentage, first for second-serve points won percentage, fifth for service points won percentage, fourth for service games won percentage and fourth for tie-break sets won. All those numbers support Keys being a major factor in the women’s singles in The Championships 12 months on from losing 6-7 6-3 3-6 to then higher ranked Agnieszka Radwanska.
