Goodwood could turn Glorious on Friday if our first selection Thikriyaat resumes winning ways. There are a large number of positives behind Sir Michael Stoute’s progressive 3 year old and the step up in trip to a mile looks sure to yield further improvement. Stoute is notorious for bringing his horses along relatively slowly and allowing them to progress with each start, and that bodes well for the son of Azamour. Thikriyaat could eventually make up into a Group 1 performer.

Thikriyaat clearly wasn’t the sharpest as a 2 year old and wasn’t seen until last October on the all-weather at Chelmsford. Those odds did not prevent the horse from showing his latent ability though, as he ran on strongly towards the finish, getting up late in the day. Experienced faster underfoot conditions when going off favourite at Newmarket to complete the hat trick and obliged by a neck.

Last time out Thikriyaat competed in his first Group 3 and finished a very creditable second. Found tonnes of trouble in running but finished with a wet sail, looking unlucky not to get closer to the winner. That winner happened to be Ribchester who really franked the form yesterday when going very close in the Sussex against some top class rivals. With 10 more yards, Richard Fahey’s horse would have won that Group 1 and that form line gives Thikriyaat a sensational chance.

Pedigree has a blend of fast and soft ground performers and Thikriyaat doesn’t seem bothered by the prevailing conditions. Only seems to do just enough and is clearly on an upwards curve.

3.10 Goodwood – Franklin D

It is rare that we make selections in handicaps where there are 20+ runners, but we will make an exception for Franklin D – a horse significantly ahead of the handicapper. After bolting up in a competitive handicap at Newmarket last time out but an impressive 6 lengths, the son of Medaglia D’oro was raised 13lbs by the handicapper. However, that rise has not yet kicked in, and he is able to race off just a 3lb higher mark. Add to that he has Ryan Moore in the saddle, and everything points towards a very strong run. The Michael Bell yard have obviously always clearly thought a lot about their 4 year old, as he remains a colt. After showing some promise early, he was stepped up to 10 furlongs and was switched to the all-weather. That did not seem to suit, but things really clicked two starts back when he returned to turf, was dropped to 1 mile and had the visor applied. Went from the front at Sandown and was only collared late in the day. Was ridden with a tiny bit more restraint last time out at Newmarket (again over 1 mile), and when sent to the front 2 furlongs out, the response was very impressive, as he gagged up by 6 lengths. The handicapper has him rated 109 and Moore’s mount gets to race off 99, so his chance is clear for all to see. As he races handily, there should be no trouble in running.
