Rosberg to End Hamilton’s Three-Race Winning Streak

July 29, 2016

Nico Rosberg won the German Grand Prix in 2014.

The German Grand Prix is important to Mercedes because many of its employees will be at the Hockenheimring to see the Silver Arrows in action and one suspects that the champion team will dominate affairs in Sunday’s Formula One race.

Lewis Hamilton is the German Grand Prix hot favourite after winning each of the last three contests and finishing first in five of the most recent six races but the British driver does not have the best of Hockenheimring records, with only one of his two German Grand Prix victories occurring at the Baden-Wurttemberg circuit. Hamilton has participated in four Formula One events at the Hockenheimring and, interestingly, he has started each of his last three races at the track behind his then teammate. Hamilton was 0.139 seconds slower than Jenson Button in qualifying for the 2010 German Grand Prix. Hamilton was 0.073s slower than Button in qualifying for the 2012 German Grand Prix. And Hamilton was a long way off Nico Rosberg’s pace in qualifying for the 2014 German Grand Prix, crashing during the first session and starting from 20th on the grid while his rival began from pole.

Rosberg won the most recent edition of the German Grand Prix held at the Hockenheimring and one thinks that he rates as this year’s value bet at odds of 3.50Bet €100 to win €3505/2Bet £100 to win £350+250Bet $100 to win $3502.50Bet HK$100 to win HK$3502.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp350-0.4000Bet RM100 to win RM350  with many bookmakers, including BetVictor, SkyBet and William Hill. It would not come as a huge surprise for Mercedes to favour Rosberg this weekend because it is his home grand prix and the results at Hockenheimring suggest that Hamilton should not be all that much shorter than his Silver Arrows teammate even allowing for the fact that the British driver is in fabulous form.

There are a couple of other German Grand Prix wagers that appeal – Sergio Perez to finish in the top six at odds of 3.00Bet €100 to win €3002/1Bet £100 to win £300+200Bet $100 to win $3002.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$3002.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp300-0.5000Bet RM100 to win RM300  with Bet365, BetVictor and William Hill and at least one safety car appearance at odds of 1.83Bet €100 to win €18383/100Bet £100 to win £183-120Bet $100 to win $1830.83Bet HK$100 to win HK$183-1.20Bet Rp100 to win Rp1830.8300Bet RM100 to win RM183  with several bookmakers, including Coral, Ladbrokes and Paddy Power.

Perez has made the top six in three of the last half a dozen contests and he failed to finish one of those races. The Hockenheimring is a track that ought to suit Perez’s Force India car because the Mercedes-powered vehicle is such a good all-round performer. Force India is the only team to have picked three sets of the medium compound tyre for the German Grand Prix and there is a definite possibility of one or both of its drivers using a one-stop strategy on Sunday.

Some bookmakers are quoting odds of 2.50Bet €100 to win €2503/2Bet £100 to win £250+150Bet $100 to win $2501.50Bet HK$100 to win HK$2501.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp250-0.6667Bet RM100 to win RM250  about Perez ending the German Grand Prix in the top six and that seems closer to the mark than 3.00Bet €100 to win €3002/1Bet £100 to win £300+200Bet $100 to win $3002.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$3002.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp300-0.5000Bet RM100 to win RM300  – the difference in probability is more than six per cent, which is quite substantial.

The safety car came out on the first lap of the 2014 German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring and, with Max Verstappen getting on the wrong side of almost everyone other Formula One driver, there is the potential for a coming together on Sunday. Surely it is only a matter of time before Verstappen features in a prang because the Dutch teenager is employing controversial tactics to defend his track position. The old heads in Formula One pit lane are tired of Verstappen’s antics and one of them may try to teach him a lesson.
