There are not too many horses who finished 6th and were beaten 13 lengths last time out that subsequently start favourite on their next start, but Awesome Quality is an occasional exception, with the hope that the switch back to the all-weather will reignite a similar performance to that of his penultimate start. The son of Elusive Quality absolutely dotted up over course and distance and James Tate’s 3 year old is an unexposed performer with the potential for plenty of improvement. At the odds he appeals as a nice bet (if coming into this race on the back of his win over course and distance, he would be going off odds on today).

James Tate isn’t renowned for putting the gun to his young horse’s heads and although Awesome Quality ran his first two races as a 2 year old at Newmarket, not too much was expected. After not disgracing himself, the colt came back this year and again ran an acceptable race at Salisbury, obtaining a handicap mark of 67 in the process. Won by just shy of four lengths that day and was really impressive. Whilst some of the improvement in performance can be attributed to moving from maidens to handicaps, partial credit has to go to the change in surface – the horse looked much more at home on the all-weather (as expected – his sire loves artificial surfaces) and over the flat and straight 7 furlongs.

After that victory last time out, Awesome Quality went up to a mark of 75, but he tried to defy a 6lb penalty at Yarmouth. Didn’t seem to act on the ground that day and was very well beaten. Has been given 6 weeks off since, and returns to the scene of his victory. Could be better than a Class 5 animal on the all-weather and looks worth chancing.

Who Dares Wins certainly doesn’t mind taking a risk, and Alan King’s versatile dual performer looks to have a solid chance of adding to his tally. A high class hurdler, the 4 year old son of Jeremy returned back to the flat and posted an emphatic success at Chester. Since last seen, Who Dares Win appears to have improved significantly and he could still be well ahead of the handicapper.
