Klopp Will Expect Liverpool to Batter Burton in EFL Cup

August 22, 2016

Liverpool lost 2-0 to Burnley despite having 80% possession.

After a dismal 2-0 defeat to Burnley at the weekend, Jurgen Klopp will be expecting a reaction from his Liverpool players when they enter the EFL Cup on Tuesday night against Burton Albion. Burnley pulled off that shock result despite only having 20% of possession in a remarkable game, but Liverpool’s inability to create and score goals will have troubled the German manager, especially after the epic 4-3 win at Arsenal just a week ago.

Those Premier League teams that are without European football this season enter the EFL Cup at this second round stage, and that means the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton are among the long list of midweek fixtures on Tuesday and Wednesday. At a glance there are plenty of bankers on the coupon, but as we all know from experience the League Cup is renowned for throwing up potential banana skins so we need to tread carefully. We’ve highlighted four bets on Tuesday night that have a good chance of landing at decent odds.

Burton Albion v Liverpool

Marathonbet are offering odds of 1.65Bet €100 to win €16513/20Bet £100 to win £165-154Bet $100 to win $1650.65Bet HK$100 to win HK$165-1.54Bet Rp100 to win Rp1650.6500Bet RM100 to win RM165  about over 2.5 goals when Liverpool visit Burton, and that looks a better option than backing the Reds to win at 1.40Bet €100 to win €1402/5Bet £100 to win £140-250Bet $100 to win $1400.40Bet HK$100 to win HK$140-2.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp1400.4000Bet RM100 to win RM140 .

Burton have made a decent enough start to life in the Championship under Nigel Clough, but one feature of their four games so far has been goals. The ball has hit the net 18 times in matches against Nottingham Forest, Bristol City, Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn – a sequence from which Burton have gained four points from one win and one draw. They clearly play an open game and look liable to score and concede in equal measure.

Liverpool have that same profile under Jurgen Klopp, and one suspects Reds fans are in for another thrilling season. After sharing seven goals with Arsenal on the opening day they fell to that shock result at Burnley on Saturday. Having had more than the Lion’s share of the ball, they really ought to have created much more, but it’s testament to the Claret’s organisation and discipline that they kept a clean sheet. One doubts whether Burton have the personnel or the organisation to match the Burnley effort, and this game screams goals.

Northampton v West Brom

Bet365 are quoting 1.83Bet €100 to win €18383/100Bet £100 to win £183-120Bet $100 to win $1830.83Bet HK$100 to win HK$183-1.20Bet Rp100 to win Rp1830.8300Bet RM100 to win RM183  about Northampton denying West Brom victory, and that looks a good bet against the Premier League favourite.

West Brom struggled past Port Vale on penalties in last seasons League Cup before being beaten 3-0 by Norwich in the next round. They were also held to draws and replays by Peterborough and Bristol City in the FA Cup, and obviously have a problem putting lower league opposition to bed.

Northampton are unbeaten this season in four League One matches and one EFL game, although they’ve drawn each one. They’ve also lost just once in their last 23 home matches in all competitions, and it will be far from easy for the Baggies to just turn up and win. Tony Pulis is well known for resting players in Cup competitions, such is the focus on Premier League survival, and the West Brom squad looks somewhat thin this season.

Peterborough v Swansea

Swansea on the other hand are a decent enough price at 2.10Bet €100 to win €21011/10Bet £100 to win £210+110Bet $100 to win $2101.10Bet HK$100 to win HK$2101.10Bet Rp100 to win Rp210-0.9091Bet RM100 to win RM210  with SkyBetBetVictor and Coral to earn a road victory when they visit Peterborough.

The Swans won this Cup in 2013, and a good cup run along with Premier League safety is probably a target for the Welsh club. They were on the wrong end of a smash and grab raid by new-boys Hull at the weekend, but had beaten Burnley in their previous top-flight encounter and are good enough to win at Posh.

Peterborough have failed to keep a clean sheet in five competitive matches this season, and they are likely to struggle against Swansea’s slick passing style of play. They’ve conceded 12 goals in those five games, and the defensive side of the game could undermine any thoughts of promotion back to the Championship.

Newcastle v Cheltenham

Finally both teams to score when Newcastle host Cheltenham is a tempting bet at 2.02Bet €100 to win €20251/50Bet £100 to win £202+102Bet $100 to win $2021.02Bet HK$100 to win HK$2021.02Bet Rp100 to win Rp202-0.9804Bet RM100 to win RM202  with 888Sport and Unibet

Promotion to the football league has given Cheltenham a big challenge this season as they look to consolidate in League Two, and although they’re yet to win, three draws and just the one narrow defeat to Doncaster gives them hope. They beat Charlton in the previous round of this competition and a trip to St James Park will be a real highlight for their players. They certainly have nothing to lose, and having scored in all but one of their competitive games this season, they will fancy their chances of bagging at Newcastle.

The Magpies have now won back-to-back Championship games after losing the first two, but they’ve only kept one clean sheet in four. The jury is out as to whether Rafa Benitez will opt to rest some of his big players, but in the context of this game Newcastle have a strong squad with plenty of depth. If he does leave players out – especially in the back four – that could well open the door for Cheltenham to find the net, even if the Magpies do go on to win comfortably.
