Limato Can Cruise to Sprint Cup Success at Haydock

4.30 Haydock – Limato

The Sprint Cup at Haydock. Just over a minute of high-speed, exhilarating action, with the star performers some of the best sprinters in the world. Henry Candy’s 4 year old Limato has been installed as a strong market leader, and his position at the top of the betting is more than justified based on recent performances. Even at short odds, he appears to represent betting value, and the son of Tagula can provide veteran trainer Henry Candy with another top grade success for his sprinters.

Limato has only had 12 runs, but he has quickly established himself as one of the best horses in the world. The speedball has won seven of those races and has finished second on a further four of those starts, demonstrating his excellent attitude and constitution – he really does handle his races well. After a very successful 2015, Limato came back in Spring over 8 furlongs at Newbury and went off as the market leader. Finished a creditable fourth that day, but didn’t finish with too much gusto, suggesting that a return to sprint trips would be the shrewd move. Dropped back to 6 furlongs next time for the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket, Limato showed his true colours, winning by a comfortable 2 lengths. Showed tonnes of speed that day and connections consequently decided that he could face a further drop in trip at York for the Nunthorpe. Was outgunned by the speedy Mecca’s Angel, but was certainly not disgraced in defeat, despite going off as a strong favourite again. The return to the straight 6 furlongs at Haydock will certainly suit, and this trip looks to be his optimum. Comfortably the top rated runner in the field, should Limato run near to his rating, he will win.

3.25 Thirsk – Magical Effect

A winner on his penultimate start, Magical Effect ran a solid race over Thirsk’s 6 furlong course last time out, finishing third in a better grade of race. Returning to the same course and distance, the son of New Approach faces a smaller field and a lower class of competition. With race fitness assured, he should be difficult to beat and odds of 4.0 seem more than reasonable.

Magical Effect is a 4 year old who is still learning his trade. After finishing twice on three separate occasions, he finally broke his duck at Thirsk over 5 furlongs in a very weak contest. Ruth Carr does well with horses who return to the track relatively quickly and Magical Effect raced just 8 days ago. Conditions were not 100% ideal, with the ground being a little soft. Regardless, the horse acquitted himself with plenty of credit finishing 2 lengths behind the winner. The horse has been inclined to race keenly and the slightly faster surface today should enable him to disperse his energy better.

There is plenty of competition, but most of the other runners are more exposed. With just 7 starts under his belt, there is plenty of learning for Magical Effect to do, and he could end up a 90 rated performer one day.
