Canaries and Magpies to Fly to Roof of Championship

Both Norwich and Newcastle won for us at the weekend, and the two relegated clubs are worth backing again on Tuesday night in their quest to return to the Premier League. Norwich got the better of Cardiff in a five-goal thriller at Carrow Road, and jumped into 5th place in the table as a result. Newcastle scored at a decent price away to Derby with a 2-0 win, and that saw them cruise into 2nd place behind surprise leaders Huddersfield.

The Terriers won their 5th game in six outings when they earned local bragging rights over Leeds at the weekend, and they are now the only unbeaten team left in the Championship. They also have a four point gap over next-best Newcastle, ahead of their trip down to Brighton this week. Birmingham shot into the top six courtesy of their 1-0 win at Fulham, while Barnsley took up 3rd place after their 2-1 win at Preston.

There are a number of tough fixtures on Tuesday and Wednesday, so along with the two main tips, a bet on goals in Barnsley’s visit to Wolves is also advised.

Norwich v Wigan

The Canaries have only suffered one shock in the league so far – the 3-0 away defeat to Birmingham – and they put that right with Saturday’s victory over Cardiff. They are well poised on 11 points in 5th place, and should continue looking upwards as the season progresses.

The game against Cardiff was comfortable up until the last five minutes when things got a little bit fraught. Norwich were two goals to the good through Cameron Jerome and Russell Martin, and looked to be coasting. Anthony Pilkington put the cat among the pigeons when he pulled one back in the 86th minute, only for Josh Murphy to add a third for Norwich shortly afterwards. It was a good job he did because Pilkington struck again deep into injury time to make a few Norwich hearts flutter.

Wigan have had a tough time since promotion back to the Championship, losing four of six matches. They sit above the relegation zone by the thin margin of goal difference, but could find themselves in the bottom three after this week’s games. A 3-0 victory over bottom club Blackburn has been the highlight, but the last three league fixtures have ended in defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest, QPR and Sheffield Wednesday.

QPR v Newcastle

The 2-0 win at Derby came via goals from Gouffran and Yedlin, leaving the Rams in 19th place in the division. Newcastle’s transfer activity has been second to none over the summer, and in Rafa Benitez they have one of Europe’s most talented coaches. The opening two losses to Huddersfield and Fulham obviously acted as a wake up call, although they may not be such bad results in light of the positions of those two clubs. It’s been five wins in a row now for Newcastle across league and cup since that poor start, and a winning run beckons.

QPR had a good start to the Championship season with back-to-back wins against Leeds and Cardiff, but back-to-back defeats against Barnsley and Preston followed. A 1-0 away win at Wigan got them back on track, but the weekend home draw with Blackburn was a disappointment for boss Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink. They won’t face many teams boasting the quality of Newcastle this season, and the odds-against price about the Magpies claiming all three points is worth taking.

It’s been a great season so far for the Tykes, and four wins from six matches has put them in third place, level on 12 points with 2nd placed Newcastle. Derby, QPR, Rotherham and Preston have been the victims, although Ipswich and Huddersfield have inflicted defeats in-between. One thing that stands out about the matches they’ve played so far is the number of goals. all but one of the Tykes games thus far have gone over the 2.5 goal mark. They are the divisions top scorers, but have the second worst defensive record in the top half.

Wolves are nicely poised in mid-table with nine points, and they’ve only succumbed to defeat once this season so far. That was away at league leaders Huddersfield, but otherwise they’ve won 2 and drawn 3 of their six fixtures. One note of caution is that their last two Championship games have gone under 2.5 goals, but overall six of their last ten have had three or more. With Barnsley’s open style both teams can get on the scoresheet here, and over 2.5 goals would be no surprise at all.
