No Reason to Abandon Newcastle Bandwagon

It was a cracking Tuesday night in the Championship with all three bets landing to give us a nice payday. Newcastle were first up with an emphatic 6-0 thrashing of QPR at Loftus road that left Rafa Benitez saying “we can still improve”. An ominous warning to the rest of the League. Norwich continued their good work with a 2-1 win over Wigan to take them into 4th in the table, and Barnsley’s 4-0 win at Wolves comfortably covered the over 2.5 goal bet.

Huddersfield’s 1-0 defeat at Brighton means that only a single point separates the Magpies from the early league leaders, and they will hope to keep up the pressure with another three points on the weekend.The likes of Shelvey, Mitrovic, Perez and Ritchie are top class players at this level, and Benitez has put together a squad more than capable of justifying favouritism for the league title. There’s a long way to go until they reach that point, but there should be plenty of money to be made in backing Newcastle to win this season.

Wolves are the likely victims this week, and the early promise in their season has ebbed away over recent games. They began the campaign with wins over Reading and Birmingham and draws with Ipswich and Rotherham. Two defeats in the last three games to Huddersfield and Barnsley have seen them hit the rudders, and the manner of the 4-0 home loss to the Tykes is of great concern. Manager Walta Zenga said that his players gave up after the first goal went in on the 73rd minute mark, and they capitulated to concede three more in the last seven.

The Canaries’ record over the first seven games reads 4-2-1, and with 14 points they’re just two off the top. The last two games have brought home victories against Cardiff and Wigan, but what stands out is that they’ve kept just two clean sheets in those seven fixtures. Four of the seven have seen at least three goals, and each of the last three have gone over the goal line.

Forest’s record in terms of goals is even more impressive. Six of their seven Championship games have gone over the 2.5 goal mark, and in total there have been 30 scored across their opening fixtures. With three wins, two draws and two defeats to their name, they sit 10th in the table with 11 points, just a point outside the play offs. They’ve won all three games at home this season – 4-3 victories over Wigan and Burton, and a 3-1 beating of Leeds.

Norwich have only won one of their three Championship away games, and that was the season opener at Blackburn. Since then they’ve drawn with Ipswich and lost at Birmingham, so there are plenty of reasons to be wary of backing them in the win market here. The Tykes have enjoyed a remarkable season so far and are third in the table with 15 points, after five wins and two draws. They were closer to favouritism for relegation than promotion at the start of the year, but have made a mockery of the odds so far. They’ve beaten Derby, QPR, Rotherham, Preston and Wolves, and are currently on a three-game winning run. Confidence will be sky high around the club at the moment, and they’re banging in the goals to boot.

Reading are 12th in the table and are on a four-game undefeated streak after draws with Brighton and Birmingham, and wins over Ipswich and Cardiff. They are certainly good enough to get something from the game, but it’s a long trip up North to Barnsley and the home side’s momentum might just carry them through.
