Rock Steady to Mutate Rivals at Kempton

October 5, 2016

Roger Charlton runs the unexposed Rock Steady at Kempton tonight.

7.20 Kempton – Rock Steady

Roger Charlton has an unexposed runner in the form of Rock Steady, and the 3 year old son of Intikhab could be well ahead of his mark now back at what might prove to be his optimum distance. Charlton is a very shrewd handler and has the services of his regular pilot George Baker who knows Kempton like the back of his hand. Rock Steady sports the first time cheekpieces, and whilst he has not in any way appeared un-genuine, they may help him concentrate a little better.

Rock Steady had a reasonably successful 2 year old career, winning on his final start last autumn. He came back this summer on a mark of 78 and tried his hand over a mile. That trip seemed a little sharp, as he was being held up early, before getting outpaced and finishing with a flourish. The step up to 10 furlongs produced the desired improvement and Rock Steady was quickly back in the winners’ enclosure, scoring at Windsor. Followed that effort up with a creditable second placed finish in a Class 3 contest at the same course, suggesting he was on an upwards curve. Was stepped up to 12 furlongs last time out at Leicester on fairly testing going and a combination of the ground and the trip proved his undoing as he again finished second. The horse hung at the end of the contest, but that can be attributed to tiredness. The drop back to 11 furlongs on the all-weather seems to be the ideal move (has previously won on the artificial surface) and he has the ideal partner in George Baker, who excels on hold up horses.

He is currently available at odds of 4.33 and with just 7 rivals standing in his way, that price represents betting value.

The pace in the race is likely to come from Panko who is market leader. Partnered by champion jockey elect Jim Crowley, Ed De Giles’ runner may have the run of the race, so it is important that Rock Steady doesn’t let him get first run. Both have similar chances, but at the better price, Rock Steady is the bet.

7.50 Kempton – Taneen

Taneen is a horse to follow. Roger Varian’s exciting 3 year old sprinter had his bubble burst in a big field Newmarket handicap last time out, but he has since been given a 90 day break and there is every chance he will resume progress now switched to the all-weather. It will not be easy though, as the son of Speightstown faces some experienced rivals, but he could potentially be a group horse, and will need to win this if he is going to achieve those aspirations.

Taneen has clearly always been well thought of, and he went off favourite on racecourse debut at Salisbury. Looked green as grass that day and ended up only finishing third, but there was definite promise in his run. Followed up that debut effort by romping home at Newmarket and was then put away for a 3 year old campaign. Needed seasonal return and finished well beaten, but came on leaps and bounds next time out and destroyed a field at Leicester on penultimate start before his effort at Newmarket last time out. Switches to the all-weather which may end up being his best surface based on pedigree (both sire and dam side are American bred). Likes to be held up and should be able to track through the front runners before being unleashed down the outside in the final furlong.
