Miss Danvers to Defy Her Price Tag Again at Newmarket

October 7, 2016

Miss Danvers has won all four races in her career.

1.35 Newmarket – Miss Danvers

Everybody is expecting the Miss Danvers bubble to burst, but she keeps on winning, and this cheaply bought filly is now going to go off favourite for the Cornwallis Group 3 Stakes at Newmarket. Unbeaten in four, if the daughter of Hellvelyn was from a sexier yard, she would be only available at prohibitive odds. As it stands, the fact that she cost so little and runs for the Johnathan Portman yard enables her to be backed at a tasty price.  Currently rated 104, she could progress further.

Miss Danvers started her career earlier this year in a soft ground maiden at Lingfield. As with many from the stable, she was unfancied, and went off at 34.00Bet €100 to win €340033/1Bet £100 to win £3400+3300Bet $100 to win $340033.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$340033.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp3400-0.0303Bet RM100 to win RM3400 . The horse obviously didn’t know her odds as she absolutely hosed up, winning by a margin just shy of 4 lengths. In reality, the filly could have won further if she pleased. Bookmakers were rightfully wary next time out, and she went off an odds on poke for a small field conditions race at Windsor. After racing handily, the speedball juvenile filly drew clear to win with something to spare. Due to her lowly sales price, Miss Danvers was then able to contest the Weatherby’s Super Sprint off a featherweight of 8 stone. She repelled 22 rivals and was impressive in the process. Despite that, the handicapper only gave her a mark of 89 – probably because she had such favourable conditions at Newbury.  Given a month off the track following that success, the daughter of Hellvelyn returned at the same track she had previously scored at, and dominated a Listed field for her biggest success to date. Her mark was elevated to 104 and she has since been given 8 weeks off the track.

Portman thinks that his filly is best with some give in the ground, despite her last two wins coming on ground officially described as good to firm. The same going reading has been given today at Newmarket, but the clerk of the course at racing HQ always likes to water a little more than he lets on and the ground is never rattling fast. Unbeaten in four starts, Miss Danvers is very uncomplicated; she is likely to race prominently and then put her head down and battle to the line. The one concern is that she is an ‘out and out 2 year old’ and may lack the physical scope of some of her rivals, but at the odds, she looks a cracking bet.  All of the other horses in the field have moderate win records, and at this stage, attitude counts for an awful lot.
