Chelsea Can Get Over the Blues on South Coast

The Premier League action is spread across the weekend, and with two games on Sunday and one on Monday night, there are plenty of good betting opportunities. Three of the sides on display featured in our midweek EFL Cup tips as West Ham secured a brilliant win over Chelsea, and Southampton did what was required to get the better of Sunderland.

On Sunday the Saints host the Blues, while West Ham take a trip to Merseyside to play Everton. Chelsea are a big price to beat Southampton due to the Saints’ great home form, but on inspection they’ve had a relatively easy run and this represents their toughest test of the season in front of their own supporters. West Ham and Stoke are two teams that have found their mojo, both securing back-to-back wins to draw clear of the bottom three. They can both be backed to get something from their games against Swansea and Everton respectively.

The Blues have won three Premier League games on the bounce without conceding a goal since Antonio Conte switched to a back three, and they’re worth following despite the midweek cup defeat at West Ham. The Italian boss made seven changes to his team from the one which humiliated Manchester United 4-0, and perhaps it was a few too many as they fell 2-1 to the Hammers at the London Stadium. The big guns will all be back in action here, and the Blues can repeat their 2-1 win here in February last season.

Remarkably that was Southampton’s last defeat on home soil, so they will go into this one brimming with confidence. Despite regularly selling their better players and losing managers, the policy hasn’t damaged their hopes yet and they are riding high in eighth place. They’re also enjoying a Europa League campaign and it’s all rosy at St. Mary’s right now. However, a look at their recent home fixtures suggests that their form is relative to the quality of their opponents. They’ve beaten Swansea, Palace (cup), Burnley and Sunderland (cup) in the last four home games, but they’ve also been held to draws by Watford and Sunderland. That’s a fortunate run of fixtures, and none of those sides are at the same level as Chelsea.

The Blues have only been beaten once on their Premier League travels – the 3-0 loss at Arsenal – and they’ve gained three points at Watford and Hull. They were held to a 2-2 draw at Swansea, but anyone who watched that game will tell you Chelsea really should have won it. Conte will be looking for a reaction from his players after the midweek defeat, and at a tasty price it’s worth backing them to give it to him.

Everton v West Ham

A great run of five league and cup wins on the trot had many pundits talking up Everton’s chances this season, but they’ve gone completely off the boil with a winless run of five games since. A 2-0 EFL Cup loss at home to Norwich started the rot, and since then they’ve been beaten by Bournemouth and Burnley and had stalemates with Manchester City and Crystal Palace.

West Ham won 3-2 here last season in March, coming from two behind to score three in the last 15 minutes. A change in their formation plus the return of key players from injury has seen them put their early season troubles behind them. It’s now three league and cup wins on the trot with the only goal conceded Chelsea’s stoppage time consolation during midweek. The introduction of Pedro Obiang in defensive midfield has worked wonders for Slaven Bilic, and his side look much more solid with the tough-tackler patrolling the central areas. At odds-against the Hammers are fancied to keep the Toffees in the doldrums with at least a draw.

Traditionally Stoke are a very strong home side in the Premier League, and although things haven’t gone to plan this season, there are signs of a turnaround. Back-to-back 2-0 league wins against Sunderland and Hull will have instilled confidence as will the two clean sheets. They’re slowly drawing away from the drop zone and face a Swansea side that looks to be in considerable trouble.

The season started well enough for the Swans with a 1-0 win at Premier League newcomers Burnley, but that was their last league victory. They now sit second bottom of the table with five points from nine games, and they’ve now lost six and drawn two of the last eight league games. Admittedly they’ve faced a tough run of fixtures including the likes of Leicester, Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City, but confidence must be low after such a poor run of results.

Stoke have won three and drawn two of the last five home games against Swansea, and you have to go back as far as a League One fixture in 2001 for the Swans last victory here.
