Arsenal and PSG Set for Champions League Stalemate

November 23, 2016

PSG and Arsenal played out an entertaining 1-1 draw on matchday one.

It was a successful night of betting in the Champions League on Tuesday night, and we go again on Wednesday. Matchday five has thrown up some excellent fixtures, and if you enjoyed last night’s football you’re in for a treat tonight.

Arsenal take on PSG for top spot in Group A, with both sides level on ten points and already assured of qualification. Nothing will be decided for certain on the night, but the winner at the Emirates will surely go on to win the group. For the Gunners there’s been a huge turnaround since the return fixture in Paris on matchday one, when pressure was rife. A poor start to the Premier League season had Arsenal fans grumbling, but since they fought back for a draw through Alexi Sanchez’ goal, it’s been more or less plain sailing. They have qualified for the knockout stages with two games to spare, and sit 4th in the Premier League. They’re also unbeaten in 17 games across all competitions and can approach this tie with confidence.

Manchester City are yet to confirm qualification, but could do so with three points at Monchengladbach tonight. The German side must also win to have any chance of leap-frogging Pep Guardiola’s side and making an unlikely appearance in the knockout stages. It all adds up to what should be an open game with both teams gunning for the win.

In the same group Celtic host Barcelona, and will be attempting to keep their own Champions League hopes alive as well as gain some revenge for the 7-0 thrashing they suffered in the Nou Camp. Realistically, Europa League football is the best Brendan Rodgers’ men can hope for, but it’s a big ask to beat the Spanish giants.

Arsenal v PSG

Starting with the game at the Emirates, and the draw is the best value call at 3.60Bet €100 to win €36013/5Bet £100 to win £360+260Bet $100 to win $3602.60Bet HK$100 to win HK$3602.60Bet Rp100 to win Rp360-0.3846Bet RM100 to win RM360  with BetVictor.

When these sides met in Paris back in September Cavani gave the home side the lead in the first minute, after a terrible start from the Gunners. PSG could have gone on to put the game beyond doubt several times, but they missed a number of key chances. That gave Alexi Sanchez the chance to equalise in the 78th minute for an Arsenal side that improved throughout the game, and they could have snatched it late on. The farcical sending off of Giroud and Verratti in the final minutes simply added to the spectacle of what was a very entertaining match.

Given their form since then and the fact that they are on home soil, Arsenal will feel bullish about their prospects of winning here, but PSG are a quality side who have only been beaten twice in 18 matches this season. They’re currently on a run of 8 wins from 9 games and will also approach this match with confidence. Arsenal have drawn 1-1 with Spurs and Manchester United in their last two games, and another stalemate against a top team would be no big surprise.

Monchengladbach v Manchester City

Manchester City thumped Monchengladbach 4-0 in their previous encounter, and odds of 1.60Bet €100 to win €1603/5Bet £100 to win £160-167Bet $100 to win $1600.60Bet HK$100 to win HK$160-1.67Bet Rp100 to win Rp1600.6000Bet RM100 to win RM160  with Betfair about over 2.5 goals in this game make plenty of appeal.

Both sides have good reasons to try and win this game, although a point wouldn’t be the worst result for City. They lead the Germans by three points in Group C, so a draw would effectively see them through as they have the better head-to-head record. Not that anyone expects a Pep Guardiola team to play for the point, as it’s simply not in his nature. For Monchengladbach only a win will do, and it would put them level on points going into matchday six – despite the fact that they would have to win in Barcelona and hope that City struggle at home to Celtic. It would take a herculean effort then for Monchengladbach to qualify, but they have no other option than to go for it.

City’s record shows that they’ve conceded in 9 of the last 10 games – their only clean sheet was in the 4-0 away win at West Brom. We also know all about their goal-scoring prowess, and each of their Champions League games so far has had at least four goals.

Monchengladbach have to play for pride and an unlikely win and they have the ability to score goals, but they will risk leaving themselves open at the back if they chase the game, and City can be deadly on the break.

Celtic v Barcelona

Finally, it might be worth going for an extra goal at Celtic Park, where over 3.5 goals is quoted at 2.20Bet €100 to win €2206/5Bet £100 to win £220+120Bet $100 to win $2201.20Bet HK$100 to win HK$2201.20Bet Rp100 to win Rp220-0.8333Bet RM100 to win RM220  with Paddy PowerWilliam Hill and Betfair

The Scottish champions may have drawn 1-1 with Monchengladbach after a 2-0 loss at home, but their games against Barcelona and City tell a different story. They were humbled 7-0 by MSN in the Nou Camp back in September, but played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with City on matchday two. Another goalfest could well be on the cards as at this stage in proceedings, Celtic might as well go for the jugular.

Barca’s 3-1 defeat at Man City will give Rodgers hope that his side can cause problems for the Spaniards, and with their fiercely vocal crowd behind them, the Hoops can be a match for anyone. They’ll take the game to Barcelona, but in truth, not many teams get away with doing that. Messi, Neymar and Suarez can hurt the best sides in the world, and a victory here would put them in a group-winning position.

It should be another end-to-end entertaining game, and backing goals is the best way to go.
