Peter Throwing Wright at the Top of His Game

It’s been an incredible week for Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright, and we’re backing the colourful character to keep up the good work in the PDC Premier League. He hit the second highest TV average ever last week in beating Adrian Lewis on night five in Exeter, recording a 119.50 average in a 7-2 victory. That was second only to Michael van Gerwen’s remarkable 123.40 record achieved last year, and Wright made the most of the Dutchman’s absence to register his first big TV title by winning the UK Open over the weekend. Having lost to Mighty Mike in the final of the last two UK Opens Wright went one better in Minehead, beating Gerwyn Price 11-6.

Wright has laid down the gauntlet to van Gerwen. After winning the UK Open he said he’d previously told the number one that he’d cleared out all of his runners-up medals and was going to fill the room with winners trophies! Van Gerwen congratulated Wright, but told him not to get used to it, and the Dutchman is set to return to action in Glasgow this week after a minor back injury. That problem kept him out of last week’s Premier League on a night where Dave Chisnall took full advantage of an unexpected second game.

Chizzy’s double over Raymond van Barneveld and James Wade helped him move clear of the bottom of the table, and inflicted a first defeat of the season on Wade. Gary Anderson and Phil Taylor shared a point from their encounter, although Anderson will rue a missed chance to win the game. Jelle Klaasen and Kim Huybrechts also both had to settle for an unsatisfactory point, which leaves the pair at the foot of the early table.

As well as van Gerwen’s return, night six in Glasgow promises to be a cracking evening with several intriguing battle lines up. Gary Anderson will have the full support of his home crowd as he takes on the rejuvenated Chisnall, while Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis renew the friendliest of rivalries.

From a negative perspective, the euphoria of winning his first major title could go against Wright in the context of this game, but one suspects it will just do more to add to his confidence. He may not repeat that 119.50 average any time soon, but the weekend performance showed that he playing to a very high level of form. A tournament average of 101.70, was complemented by hitting the most 180s (34), and landing a 47% finishing rate.

Wade was unbeaten in this year’s Premier League before the 7-5 reverse to Dave Chisnall, and it wasn’t one of the left-hander’s best nights. He produced a sub-90 average and only hit 24% of checkouts. The performance was much better over the weekend, going down to a narrow 10-8 defeat to Lewis, but this is a tough game that Wright is expected to shade.

Adrian Lewis v Phil Taylor

Taylor hasn’t been playing anything like his best darts so far this season, yet he finds himself top of the Premier League and is still unbeaten after two wins and three draws. His average in last week’s 6-6 draw with Anderson was a big improvement on previous weeks though, even if he does remain bottom of the table for Premier League 180s with just six maximums.

Lewis has never made any secret of the fact that he struggles with the shorter format competitions, but such is his talent that he is always a threat. One win, one draw, and three defeats isn’t a great return from five Premier League games so far though, and if Taylor finds more improvement this week he will be a tough nut to crack.

The Flying Scotsman is one point and one place below Chizzy in the table, but has played a game less so far. His draws have come against Taylor, Wade and van Gerwen, and the only defeat was to Wright. That’s not bad form at all in the circumstances, and it would be a surprise if Anderson isn’t in the play off shake up come the end of the season.

Chisnall may have benefited from an under-par James Wade performance last week in the 7-5 win – the left-hander missed double tops for a draw in the deciding leg – but there was no fluke about Chizzy’s 7-2 win over van Barneveld in which he averaged over 101. However, playing against Anderson in Glasgow is a tough task for any player, and this one should go the way of the favourite.
