Helfire to Turn up the Heat at Chelmsford City Racecourse

Another day yesterday where we went close to sealing the double, but just failed. Interestingly, our short priced favourite was touched off by a very smart looking runner, but our bigger priced selection Papou Tony won in facile fashion at Kempton. Four points up for the day, can’t complain! Two more for Thursday, each with a good chance in their own right.

2.40 Chelmsford – Helfire

Helfire provides the first of our selections on Thursday, and this unexposed daughter of Archipenko could provide Hughie Morrison with a winner. The 4 year old filly returns from a 198 day break, but coming from the Morrison yard, there shouldn’t be too much concern regards her race fitness, and she is the type of horse to progress with racing this season.

Helfire has a record of 2 wins from 9 runs, with 8 of her runs coming from last June-September. She was never too far away and looked like a consistent runner that was learning on the job. Was usually held up midfield and delivered late in the day. From stall 10, she is likely to drop in and then benefit from a strong early gallop.

The Class 6 handicap at Chelmsford over 5 furlongs looks to be a really interesting event on paper, with 4 last time out winners in the line-up. As expected, the market is quite open, as the horses can be quite inconsistent at the lower level, especially with the sprinters. Roy’s Legacy is a veteran, especially on the all-weather, and Shaun Harris seems to have brought this sprinter back to life in recent times. The horse has 12 wins and 19 places from 62 all weather starts – he really has been a consistent horse. He signalled that he was coming back into form on penultimate start when going within inches of success at Lingfield. Was drawn wide that day and raced alone before joining in with the rest of the field and narrowly failed. Followed that up last time out at Southwell, where he should a good attitude to score. May be drawn out wide in stall 10, but as the horse showed at Lingfield, he can race near the car park and still be competitive.

Once the fledging trainer has them in form, he tends to keep them there. The plan will be to blast out, get the lead and then dictate the pace. Charlie Bennett’s 5lb claim should offset the rise for the victory and he looks a decent price.
