Seagulls Have Championship Title in Their Sights

April 16, 2017

Brighton have a four point lead at the top of the Championship.

Brighton moved four points clear of Newcastle at the top of the Championship on Friday after an impressive 2-0 win away at Wolves. Chris Hughton’s side now need just four more points from their remaining four games to secure promotion to the Premier League, but could go up as early as Monday if they beat Wigan at home and Huddersfield fail to beat Derby in the teatime kick off. The Seagulls warrant support when they welcome the relegation-threatened Latics, for whom this is arguably the worst possible fixture to follow on the heels of back-to-back wins.

Meanwhile the race for the play offs was made much clearer by Friday’s results, and it looks very much like four from five in the battle for the top six. Norwich, Preston and Derby all lost last time out to all but end their faint play off hopes, and only Fulham look in a position to threaten third to sixth in the table. Huddersfield, Reading, Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday are the teams looking to fight off the Cottagers, and two of those sides make appeal from a betting perspective on Monday afternoon.

Leeds scored with almost the last kick of the game to snatch an unlikely point at Newcastle on Friday night, and they welcome Wolves to fortress Elland Road. Reading, fresh from a 3-1 win at Aston Villa on Saturday, will host a Rotherham side which has lost 20 of it’s 21 Championship away games this season.

Brighton v Wigan

First, back Brighton to take a step closer to the Premier League by beating Wigan at 1.53Bet €100 to win €15353/100Bet £100 to win £153-189Bet $100 to win $1530.53Bet HK$100 to win HK$153-1.89Bet Rp100 to win Rp1530.5300Bet RM100 to win RM153  with BetVictor and Bet365.

Brighton haven’t been out of the top two since October, and while they’ve played second fiddle for much of that time, they’ve risen to the summit at the perfect moment. They’ve won the last four on the spin as Newcastle have struggled to maintain form, and a title win is well within reach. The trophy would be a huge achievement, but Chris Hughton will leave his players under no illusions about what the real prize is. Premier League football and the riches that come with it are a massive motivator for his team, and one suspects they will come out ready to put Wigan to the sword.

The Latics have given themselves a survival lifeline in recent weeks with successive 3-2 wins over Rotherham and Barnsley, but they are still five points from safety with time running out. That pair of victories were both at home, however, and Wigan have been beaten in six of their last away matches.

Reading v Rotherham

Reading are fourth in the table and six points clear of chasing Fulham. A home victory over Rotherham will take them a step closer to securing their play off place, and the Royals look decent value to win by two or more goals at 2.13Bet €100 to win €213113/100Bet £100 to win £213+113Bet $100 to win $2131.13Bet HK$100 to win HK$2131.13Bet Rp100 to win Rp213-0.8850Bet RM100 to win RM213  with 188Bet.

Rotherham have lost an astonishing 20 of 21 away games in England’s second tier this season, conceding 61 goals in the process. That’s an average of almost three per game, and Reading are capable of covering a -1.5 handicap in Monday’s game. The Royals bagged a 3-1 victory away at Aston Villa on Saturday, and although this is a very quick turnaround, it could hardly be a better fixture.

The Millers have long been relegated and still have just 18 points for their troubles this season. They’ve conceded 18 goals in the last five road trips alone, and one suspects Reading could have a field day.

Leeds v Wolves

Finally, Leeds are too good to miss at 2.20Bet €100 to win €2206/5Bet £100 to win £220+120Bet $100 to win $2201.20Bet HK$100 to win HK$2201.20Bet Rp100 to win Rp220-0.8333Bet RM100 to win RM220  with BetVictor to beat Wolves.

Wanderers had put together a great run of five straight wins recently, but have since lost back-to-back games against Bristol City and Brighton. In no danger of relegation or promotion, it’s hard to imagine Wolves will have anything like the same motivation as Leeds here.

the Whites were ecstatic on Friday night as Chris Wood’s late volley saw them snatch a point from Newcastle, and it could prove to be a crucial one in the race for the top six. Leeds are 5th at the moment but are only three points ahead of a Fulham side which boasts a superior goal difference. With four games and twelves points to play for, there is little room for manoeuvre.

Garry Monk has had a great impact at Leeds, and a big part of that success has been built on home form. They have the fourth best home record in the division, and have won 8 of the last 10 in front of their own fans. They’ve also kept 8 clean sheets in that run and are a cracking bet at odds-against to secure another three points.
