Goals Galore in Wednesday’s Champions League Ties

April 18, 2017

Juventus beat Barcelona 3-0 in the quarter final first leg.

They couldn’t do it again. Could they? Barcelona were down and out in the last 32 of the Champions League after losing 4-0 away at PSG, yet a Neymar-inspired side completed one of the greatest comebacks of all time to navigate a way through to the quarter finals. It looked all the more impossible when Edison Cavani’s goal made it 5-3 on aggregate deep into the second leg 2nd half at the Nou Camp, but an incredible three-goal burst in the dying moments snatched a 6-5 aggregate victory from the jaws of defeat.

A task of similar proportions awaits on Wednesday night when the Catalans welcome Italian champions Juventus to the famous stadium. A 3-0 away loss in Turin has put Barcelona in hot water once again, but will history repeat itself against one of Europe’s tightest defences?

On the same night it’s the 2nd leg of the Dortmund v Monaco tie which was postponed by 24 hours last week. An attack on the Dortmund team bus prevented the match from taking place last Tuesday, and Monaco won the re-arranged game 3-2 in Wednesday evening. It was incredibly tough for the Dortmund players who were asked to play so soon after the shocking events, and unfortunately it could have put an end to this year’s Champions League dreams. The bookmakers still make the German side favourites to win in the French Riviera, and judging by the attacking nature of both teams, it should be a thrilling match.

Barcelona v Juventus

It’s all set up for another epic night at the Nou Camp, but odds of 6.00Bet €100 to win €6005/1Bet £100 to win £600+500Bet $100 to win $6005.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$6005.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp600-0.2000Bet RM100 to win RM600  about Barcelona qualifying for the semi finals are as unappealing as the same price about Juventus winning this match over 90 minutes. Lightning might strike twice, but one suspects Juventus will come with a much better drilled defence than the PSG one which conceded six goals in the last round. A more interesting bet is Barca to win and both teams to score at 2.65Bet €100 to win €26533/20Bet £100 to win £265+165Bet $100 to win $2651.65Bet HK$100 to win HK$2651.65Bet Rp100 to win Rp265-0.6061Bet RM100 to win RM265  with 32Red and 888Sport.

Barcelona’s troubles do not stem from the attacking trio of Messi, Neymar and Suarez, but more from their inability to keep clean sheets. Despite winning nine of the last ten at home, they’ve kept just three clean sheets in the process. Juventus have scored in each of their last 14 away matches since a 1-0 defeat to AC Milan in October, and will be well aware of the importance of an away goal.

Few teams can restrict this Barcelona side from scoring at the Nou Camp, and they’ve hit at least three in each of the last six matches in front of their own fans. Juve will take a similar approach to that of PSG in their ill-fated last 32 clash – the Italians will look to hit the Spanish side on the break and snatch the vital away goal. One suspects that Dybala and co. are good enough to find the net, but may still find themselves with backs-to-the-wall for much of the game. A bet on a Barca win and both to score keeps the door open to the comeback, but will return a profit even if the Catalans fall short.

Monaco v Dortmund

Monaco and Dortmund are two of the most prolific sides in Europe and over 3.5 goals at 2.02Bet €100 to win €20251/50Bet £100 to win £202+102Bet $100 to win $2021.02Bet HK$100 to win HK$2021.02Bet Rp100 to win Rp202-0.9804Bet RM100 to win RM202  with Marathonbet looks a good starting point for bets on this match. Over 4.5 goals is also worth a small investment at 3.25Bet €100 to win €3259/4Bet £100 to win £325+225Bet $100 to win $3252.25Bet HK$100 to win HK$3252.25Bet Rp100 to win Rp325-0.4444Bet RM100 to win RM325  with Bet365 and Betfair.

Monaco scored twice and missed a penalty in the opening 35 minutes last week as Dortmund’s players visibly struggled to focus on the game. The Yellow and Blacks fought back to win the second half 2-1 and gave themselves a chance with a 3-2 aggregate defeat. That means it’s an attacking mission for the Germans, but Monaco hold the upper hand with three away goals.

Both sides are full of goals as their Champions League records show. Dortmund shared two 2-2 draws with Real Madrid in the group stages, as well as beating Legia 6-0 and 8-4 in two memorable matches. Monaco’s last 32 tie with Manchester City resulted in a 5-3 away defeat at the Etihad and a 3-1 win back at home.

If Monaco score – something which they rarely fail to do on home soil – Dortmund will need three goals on the night to go through. This is a situation which ought to lead to plenty of German pressure, but Monaco are fast and dangerous on the break. It may just be one of those Champions League nights where two teams go toe-to-toe trying to outscore one another, and armchair viewers could be in for a treat. A bet on goals will allow us to sit back and enjoy the action.
