Dutch Three Women in Unpredictable French Open

May 27, 2017

The French Open women’s singles is most open Grand Slam event in many years with neither Serena Williams nor Maria Sharapova lining up in Roland Garros and the universal favourite in their absence, Simona Halep, yet to break through for her maiden major championship victory.

Between them, Williams and Sharapova have won five of the last six French Open women’s singles titles and last year’s champion, Garbine Muguruza, is not in good form. Add in doubts about Halep’s ability to beat the top women’s singles stars on clay – the Romanian is 3-10 versus top-10 players on the red stuff – and there must be great value somewhere.

Women’s singles tournaments are more unpredictable than the men’s singles competitions at Grand Slam level so one is going to advocate dutching several women’s singles players because of the relatively long prices that are available.

The ground-breaking website, Tennis Abstract, maintains a Elo rating list for women’s singles stars and, according to a combination of it and one’s own value judgements, there appears to be value in backing Svetlana Kuznetsova at odds of 15.00Bet €100 to win €150014/1Bet £100 to win £1500+1400Bet $100 to win $150014.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$150014.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp1500-0.0714Bet RM100 to win RM1500  with several bookmakers, including BetVictor, Ladbrokes and SkyBet. Kuznetsova is ranked 14th on Tennis Abstract’s Elo rating list when surfaces are not factored into its number crunching but she is sixth based on purely clay results and the five women’s singles players above her are Williams, Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka (out of action), Halep and Muguruza. Kuznetsova has a positive head-to-head record versus top-10 women’s singles stars on clay and, at the odds, she makes more appeal than Halep and Muguruza.

Elina Svitolina is well worth including in your French Open women’s singles portfolio at odds of 9.00Bet €100 to win €9008/1Bet £100 to win £900+800Bet $100 to win $9008.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$9008.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp900-0.1250Bet RM100 to win RM900  with several bookmakers, including Betfred, Coral and Ladbrokes. Just Halep is placed higher than Svitolina on Tennis Abstract’s Elo rating list regardless of surface and the Russian is 10-1 on clay this season as she improves her statistics on the red stuff. The youngest player among the French Open women’s singles favourites, Svitolina is a rising force.

At odds of 15.00Bet €100 to win €150014/1Bet £100 to win £1500+1400Bet $100 to win $150014.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$150014.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp1500-0.0714Bet RM100 to win RM1500  with several bookmakers, including Bet365, Bwin and Winner Sports, Kristina Mladenovic rounds out one’s French Open women’s singles picks. Mladenovic is 9-3 on clay this term and, like Svitolina, her numbers on the red stuff is getting better quickly. Mladenovic will enjoy the support of the Paris crowd and, in a French Open women’s singles that may not take a lot of winning, she could be a bolter.

Dutching Kuznetsova, Svitolina and Mladenovic at their best prices produces a three-pronged French Open women’s singles wager at odds of approximately 4.09Bet €100 to win €409309/100Bet £100 to win £409+309Bet $100 to win $4093.09Bet HK$100 to win HK$4093.09Bet Rp100 to win Rp409-0.3236Bet RM100 to win RM409 . One would rather have Kuznetsova, Svitolina and Mladenovic running for them than going all in on Halep at not much bigger of a dividend.

The French Open men’s singles is less attractive from a futures punting perspective than the women’s singles. One’s gut feel is that Rafael Nadal is too short at odds on to win what would be his 10th French Open men’s singles crown but, apart from laying the Spaniard on a betting exchange, one cannot get excited about backing any one of his rivals individually. For once, sit back and watch the French Open men’s singles without having a financial involvement.
