7.05 Southwell – Global Bonus

Global Bonus hails from the underrated Caroline Bailey stable, and at a course the trainer does well at, this horse is particularly interesting in what looks a weak maiden. The horse has been priced up as a second favourite behind the Nicky Henderson trained Monbeg Legend, but that runner is returning from a 793-day absence so his wellbeing has to be taken on trust.

Similar to the favourite, Global Bonus has had an interrupted career. The horse ran three times between March of 2014 and January of 2015, and he cut no ice, recording low RPR’s, looking like a career in racing probably wasn’t the right choice. Was off for a year and understandably returned at odds of 151.00Bet €100 to win €15100150/1Bet £100 to win £15100+15000Bet $100 to win $15100150.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$15100150.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp15100-0.0067Bet RM100 to win RM15100 , but ran a huge race at Huntingdon, finishing third, recording an RPR of 117. Something went wrong after that race and the horse was off for another year until this March, when he returned and finished second in an eight runner contest at Worcester. On the back of those efforts, Global Bonus has been given a mark of 118, suggesting he is a runner with ability – and certainly a horse who can win a maiden hurdle.

Caroline Bailey horses who have been off for up to 4 weeks when they were off for 8+ weeks before their last run, do very well; 23/131 (18%) for £68 LSP, with the horses winning 50% more often than they should do based on odds. The Nicky Henderson horse has run once and won that start, but he will have to come back as good as ever in order to compete with our selection. 8.20 Fontwell – Day Of Roses

Day Of Roses was going to be a strong selection for the SBO Racing team last week, but Jeremy Scott decided to pull the horse out for one reason or another, and instead the last time out winner goes for what looks an easier race against just two rivals at Fontwell. He is priced up at 1.67Bet €100 to win €16767/100Bet £100 to win £167-149Bet $100 to win $1670.67Bet HK$100 to win HK$167-1.49Bet Rp100 to win Rp1670.6700Bet RM100 to win RM167  with Coral and Bet365, but the horse looks like he has the potential to be much better than his mark, and it would be no surprise to see his odds contract further before the off.

Day Of Roses has an interesting profile. He ran in 6 Point to Point contests and only got off the mark on his final start. Switched to hurdles in January of 2016 and didn’t cut much ice, finishing down the field in all of his starts in the year. Finally got a handicap mark and that immediately yielded improvement, with the son of Acambaro finishing second at Fontwell. Didn’t do much in next two starts but was really well backed last time out which was interesting as the yard had another horse who on paper had a better chance. Jeremy Scott had given Day Of Roses a small break and it seemed to do the horse the world of good. He was ridden with supreme confidence at the back of the field and despite making one bad error, the horse sauntered through to lead between the last two flights, and pulled away for a facile victory, scoring by an eased down 16 lengths. Judging by that effort, Day Of Roses is 20lbs better than his mark and he carries just the mandatory 7lb penalty for the victory last time out, so the horse is definitely well in.

Jeremy Scott does very well with his older horses (4 year old+) who want last time out; 46/184 (25%) for £36 LSP, with the horses winning 26% more often than they should do based on odds. The competition isn’t particularly strong, with Golden Investment likely to provide the main danger. The Donald McCain runner has good form but has finished second on four of his last five starts so perhaps doesn’t have the will to win.
