Oppose Wave of British Optimism at Wimbledon

After highlighting two outsiders for the men’s and women’s singles titles at Wimbledon before the start of the tournament it’s time to reassess the situation as we head into the quarter finals of the famous competition.

Our tip for the men’s title was dealt a huge blow as Nick Kyrgios had to withdraw injured from his first round match. The controversial Australian star had to retire two sets into his match with Pierre-Hugues Herbert as a long-standing hip injury continues to plague his career. Meanwhile Elina Svitolina, our long shot bet for the women’s title, was knocked out by Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth round after a promising campaign during the first week at the Championships.

There is a wave of optimism surrounding Andy Murray and Johanna Konta, but the British pair could be skewing the betting markets as patriotic punters place their bets on the darlings of British tennis. Murray won the tournament in 2013 and 2016, interrupted by Novak Djokovic’s back-to-back wins in 2014 and 2015. The Scottish player has successfully navigated his way to this week’s quarter finals where he will face American Sam Querrey, and he is among the favourites to lift the trophy again in 2017.

Johanna Konta has burst onto the scene over the last two years, climbing from 150 to be ranked number 7 in the world. She is yet to win a maiden grand slam though, with her best performance coming in the Australian Open where she reached the semi final. Men’s Singles

Novak Djokovic is still to play his fourth round match against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, scheduled for Tuesday, but he is expected to win. A semi final against Roger Federer will await should both legends of the game reach the last four, and that will be an epic worth watching for neutral fans of the game. Federer retains plenty of ability, but his only grand slam victory since 2012 was the Australian Open that he won earlier this year.

Women’s Singles

The women’s singles is a wide open affair and the bookmakers are struggling to name the favourite for the title in 2017.  Garbine Muguruza, Coco Vandeweghe, and Johanna Konta share favouritism, while Venus Williams and Simona Halep follow not far behind.

Once the dominant force in the game, Venus Williams is currently ranked 11th in the world. Although she won the Australian Open in 2017, it remains to be seen if she can roll back the years at the age of 37 to claim her 6th Wimbledon title. There would be few more popular winners were she to do so, but popular support will not be enough to carry her through. A tough quarter final against 2017 French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko will test the former world number one.

Spain’s Garbine Muguruzu is also a French Open winner (2016), and reached the final of Wimbledon in 2015 where she was beaten by Serena Williams. Ranked 14th in the world, she has shown ability on grass but faces a tough quarter final against Svetlana Kuznetsova. The Russian player is ranked number 8 in the world and is contesting her fourth quarter final at Wimbledon.

Simona Halep is currently ranked number two in the world, and is the highest ranked player left in the tournament after Angelique Kerber was knocked out by Muguruzu in the fourth round. Halep is another who is yet to win a grand slam title, but she has gone close on several occasions. She has twice reached the final of the French Open (2014 and 2017), and has gone as far as the semi finals in the US Open (2015) and Wimbledon (2014).

She reached the quarter final of last year’s Championships, where she was beaten by eventual finalist Kerber, but she will not face such an arduous task this time around. If she can get the better of Konta, a semi final against either Williams or Ostapenko, and can be fancied to beat either to reach a first ever Wimbledon final. At the odds, Halep is certainly worth a speculative bet ahead of Tuesday’s quarters.
