Take the Longshots in 3PM Premier League Kick Offs

With so many Premier League games live on TV these days the traditional 3pm kick offs often take a back seat, but there are some very intriguing fixtures this Saturday in England’s top flight. Two sides which are yet to get a point on the board will meet in the North East as West Ham make the long trip up to Newcastle, and there could be a touch of value about the visitors who were unfortunate to miss out on a draw at Southampton last weekend.

Another side the bookmakers are out to get is newly-promoted Huddersfield, despite the Terriers dream start to the season with two wins out of two. They welcome Southampton to the John Smith’s stadium this weekend, and are a big price to register a third  victory in a row. The Saints have had a decent start themselves with four points from two games, but a 0-0 draw with Swansea and a late 3-2 win over ten-man West Ham are not necessarily a sign of great form. Both of those games were at home too, so this represents Southampton’s first road trip of the season.

Less of a long shot but a good price nonetheless, are Watford at home to Brighton. The Seagulls have lost both games so far without scoring a goal, while the Hornets have managed four points after a win over Bournemouth and a draw with Liverpool.

Newcastle v West Ham

Newcastle’s season got off to a bad start with a 2-0 home defeat to Spurs, with Jonjo Shelvey sent off for standing in Dele Alli. They followed that up with a 1-0 defeat away at Huddersfield last weekend, and lost out 3-2 after extra time to Nottingham Forest in midweek in the Carabao Cup. Defenders Lejeune and Dummett are both expected to miss at least a few weeks after picking up injuries in that spurs game, and Rafa Benitez squad is already being stretched to the limit.

West Ham surrendered meekly at Manchester United on the opening day, going down 4-0 in a ruthless display by the Red Devils. Things went from bad to worse in the next game at Southampton when Marko Arnautovic was sent off for an elbow on Jack Stephens, and former Saint Jose Fonte gave away a penalty to see them go 2-0 down. However, an inspired fight back in which Javier Hernandez bagged his first two goals for West Ham saw them draw level, only for Pablo Zabaleta to concede a second spot kick in injury time. Charlie Austin dispatched to give Southampton a 3-2 win, but there were signs of improvement in the West Ham ranks.

This game looks fairly evenly balanced, and at the odds it’s worth chancing a Hammers win.

Huddersfield v Southampton

After surprising everyone with a 3-0 win at Crystal palace on the opening day, the Terriers bagged another three points with a win over Newcastle on home soil. It’s going to be a roller coaster ride for Huddersfield fans this season, but we can expect the stadium to be rocking for every match they play in front of the faithful. Australian Aaron Mooy, signed from Manchester City on a permanent transfer after a season on loan, is proving to be a key man for David Wagner’s side and he could prove to be an astute buy.

Southampton were beaten 2-0 at home by Wolves in the Carabao Cup in midweek, and Virgil Van Dijk still appears to be on his way out of the club. Despite selling such an array of talent over the last few years Saints have been excellent in the transfer market, and have recently signed Lazio’s Dutch international defender Wesley Hoedt. He could slot straight into the side if fit. It may be that Southampton bring Huddersfield crashing back down to earth here, but after two average performances, a chance is taken that they make the long trip back down to the South coast empty-handed.

Watford v Brighton

The Hornets are showing signs of being a more settled outfit this term, and manager Marco Silva has better tools at his disposal than he did with Hull at the back end of last season. they snatched a last-gasp 3-3 draw with Liverpool first time out, but followed up with a comfortable 2-0 win at Bournemouth, and currently sit in the top four of the table.

Brighton have splashed a club record £13.5 million on winger Jose Izquierdo from Club Brugges, and he will add much-needed quality to Chris Hughton’s squad. They’ve lost both games 2-0 so far – to Manchester City and Leicester – and that is an indication of how hard it is going to be for the Seagulls to compete this term.
