Monaco versus Marseille: A Match that Means Goals

August 24, 2017

The last six games between Monaco and Marseille have had more than three goals.

As we make a whistle-stop tour of European football at Sports Betting Online, we bring you the best bets in all of the top leagues throughout the continent. Check out our football tips section for our selections in the Premier League, Serie A, and La Liga. Here we’re concentrating on France’s Ligue 1, where the biggest story has been Neymar’s world record transfer to PSG.

The former Barcelona star has made a superb start to his career in Paris, scoring on his debut, grabbing two on his home debut, and dazzling the fans with his repertoire of skills. While the Parisians get Ligue 1 underway on Friday night against St Etienne, it’s not the ‘biggest’ match in the division this weekend. That honour goes to Monaco and Marseille who will meet at the Stade Louis II stadium on Sunday night. Historically these are two of France’s top sides and it is almost always a high-octane encounter when they get together.

In other matches Lyon travel to Nantes, looking to put behind them a terrible capitulation last week. After winning their opening two games, Lyon were cruising to a 100% record and nine points when they were 3-1 up at home to Bordeaux. From there Les Gones (The Kids) lost all composure and conspired to concede two goals in the last two minutes, resulting in a 3-3 draw. Nantes grabbed a much-needed win at Troyes last week, their first three points of the season after losing the first two games to Lille and Marseille.

Monaco v Marseille

Our first recommended bet this week in the Monaco vs Marseille game is over 2.5 goals at a generous 1.64Bet €100 to win €16416/25Bet £100 to win £164-156Bet $100 to win $1640.64Bet HK$100 to win HK$164-1.56Bet Rp100 to win Rp1640.6400Bet RM100 to win RM164  with 888Sport and Unibet.

A brief look at the history of this fixture suggests that we should be in for a treat in this live televised match, with goals a-plenty the order of the day. These sides met three times last season and each turned into a spectacle. The most recent was an incredible match in the Coupe de France back in March of this year, where the game was all square at 2-2 after 90 minutes. Three more extra-time goals resulted in a 4-3 Monaco win.

Prior to that Monaco took six points off Marseille in the league, exerting their dominance over old rivals. New Manchester City signing Bernardo Silva helped himself to a hat-trick as his side thumped Marseille away from home 4-1 in January. The previous games on home soil for Monaco resulted in a 4-0 victory and they definitely had the upper hand last year.

Despite losing many of their best players, it has been a perfect start to the season for the side from the French Riviera, with three wins coming at the expense of Metz, Dijon and Toulouse. They kept only one clean sheet in those three, however, so Marseille have plenty of hope that they can get amongst the goals.

For a resurgent Marseille it was a great start to the season with an opening day victory over Dijon, and they followed that up with a 1-0 away win at Nantes. Last time out they were pegged back to a 1-1 draw at home by Angers, but they are in the top five and on course to challenge for Champions League places.

A second bet for the risk-taking punters is over 3.5 goals at 2.70Bet €100 to win €27017/10Bet £100 to win £270+170Bet $100 to win $2701.70Bet HK$100 to win HK$2701.70Bet Rp100 to win Rp270-0.5882Bet RM100 to win RM270  with 32Red.

The last six games have all gone over the 2.5 goal line, while four of those have had four or more goals. It would be no great surprise if this one goes the same way, given the onus on attacking football inherent to the way both teams play.

Nantes v Lyon

One of France’s other leading lights is Lyon, and they play 24 hours earlier on Saturday where they are a decent price of 2.12Bet €100 to win €21228/25Bet £100 to win £212+112Bet $100 to win $2121.12Bet HK$100 to win HK$2121.12Bet Rp100 to win Rp212-0.8929Bet RM100 to win RM212  with Marathonbet to take three points from Nantes.

Apart from that late disaster at home to Bordeauz where they gave up the 100% record, Lyon have done little wrong this season so far. Prior to that they’d beaten Strasbourg 4-0 and won 2-1 at Rennes, and are another side well-poised in the race for Europe in 4th place in the early standings.

They’ve won four of the last five matches against Nantes, including a 6-0 thrashing on this ground back in November last season.

Nantes took three points from their trip to Troyes last week, but had been beaten 1-0 by Marseille on home soil the previous week. They only just finished outside the Europa League slots last year in 7th, so will give a good account, but Lyon should prove to be too classy on the day.
