Rising Star Zverev to Make Last Four in Big Apple

August 29, 2017

The bottom half of the US Open men’s singles draw is a lot softer than the top half and one expects Alexander Zverev to justify favouritism in the third quarter at Flushing Meadow.

Zverev is the rising star of men’s singles and he will start the US Open ranked number six in the world and seeded four due to the absence of Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka. The US Open men’s singles draw was particularly kind to Zverev, placing him in a quarter in which the other seeds are Kevin Anderson, Marin Cilic, John Isner, Karen Khachanov, Gilles Muller, Jack Sock and his older brother, Mischa Zverev.

If the US Open men’s singles seedings work out then Zverev will have to beat Anderson, Sock and Cilic to reach the last four, with Isner being the other top-16 player whom he could meet if he emerges from the eighth including Cilic. Zverev boasts a 4-0 head-to-head lead over Anderson, including a 3-0 advantage on hard courts and two straight-sets defeats of the South African this year. Zverev and Sock are tied at 1-1 but the German’s win was in straight sets whereas his loss was 7-6 6-7 4-6 in a match that could have gone either way. Zverev enjoys a 3-1 edge over Cilic, including taking out each of their three clashes in either 2016 or 2017. And never has Zverev lost to Isner with their series being 3-0 in favour of the German, including two hard-court matches.

Zverev bombed out of the Western & Southern Open men’s singles but one is willing to forgive his 6-4 3-6 4-6 loss to Francis Tiafoe and put it down to the German experiencing a low immediately following the high of his Rogers Cup men’s singles final triumph over Roger Federer. Zverev is trading at odds of 2.38Bet €100 to win €23869/50Bet £100 to win £238+138Bet $100 to win $2381.38Bet HK$100 to win HK$2381.38Bet Rp100 to win Rp238-0.7246Bet RM100 to win RM238  with Betfred and Coral to qualify for the US Open men’s singles semi-finals and that rates as a good bet.

The US Open men’s singles field are dropping like flies – Andy Murray withdrew on Saturday saying that his chronic right hip injury would prevent him from winning the title and, therefore, he did not want to make it worse simply to reach the latter stages before bowing out – so one would not be surprised if Federer won his 20th grand slam event. But one cannot get excited about Federer at his US Open men’s singles odds given his advancing years and the same goes for Rafael Nadal. Zverev may well become the latest player to break through in the US Open’s men singles but he is too short in championship betting based on his current resume.

The US Open women’s singles is wide open with bookmakers almost offering double-digit odds about every woman in the 128-player draw. It is impossible to construct a strong argument for any of the favourites and one does not like betting on women’s singles tennis at the best of times because breaks of serve are common and form lines are considerably less likely to hold up than those in men’s singles. Any US Open women’s singles pick would come with several caveats so stick with backing Zverev to reach the last four of the men’s singles in New York.
