England To Comfortably Defeat West Indies

The West Indies proved their talent in the shortest form of the game by defeating England by 21 runs in their only T20 of the series.

Evin Lewis continued his outstanding form with the bat by blasting a half-century off 26 deliveries, while Chris Gayle played a blistering innings making 44.

The Three Lions got off to a strong start in their reply as Alex Hales found the boundary with regularity. However, once the opener was dismissed Eoin Morgan’s men began to unravel.

Sunil Narine and Carlos Brathwaite put the clamps on the home side and were able to dismiss England well short of their target.

Morgan and his side now have to bounce back in the one-day series. England have been resurgent in their 50-over form since their dramatic failure in the 2015 World Cup.

They had won six out of their last seven ODI series entering the Champions Trophy, only to be knocked out in the semi-finals by Pakistan.

The 25-year-old notched his half-century in 26 deliveries and Lewis appeared to be on course for a third century in the shortest format. However, he was dismissed going for one big shot to many, being caught by Joe Root off the bowling of Liam Plunkett.

Lewis has not had the success in ODIs as he has enjoyed in the T20s. He has a ODI century under his belt made against Sri Lanka last year, but in his other 16 innings he has failed to pass 50. His inconsistency will be a concern for Jason Holder’s men heading into the series.

One of the aspects of his play that will need to be monitored over of the course of the series is his patience. Lewis will have more time to build an innings from the top of the order. Whether he has the nous to stop himself from going all out in the early overs will determine his success.

England’s Top Bowler

Plunkett has been a reliable bowler for England in limited-overs cricket. After making an impact as a youngster his career looked to heading on a downwards trajectory. However, he has found his form to become a regular in the ODIs and T20, offering a threat with his pace and bounce.

He took three wickets to stem the tide at the Emirates Riverside, removing Marlon Samuels, Keiron Pollard and Lewis. The 32-year-old’s consistency over the last year has been very impressive, with Morgan often going to the senior bowler to break partnerships.

Plunkett has a good record against the West Indies, taking 10 wickets in the three-match series earlier this year. The pace bowler plies his trade in the middle overs where he has formed a strong tandem with Adil Rashid. The two Yorkshire players have been key cogs in England’s recent success in the 50-over format.

The 32-year-old has had a good year for the Three Lions and will be desperate to end the campaign on a high note.
