England To Comfortably Defeat West Indies

September 18, 2017

The West Indies proved their talent in the shortest form of the game by defeating England by 21 runs in their only T20 of the series.

Evin Lewis continued his outstanding form with the bat by blasting a half-century off 26 deliveries, while Chris Gayle played a blistering innings making 44.

The Three Lions got off to a strong start in their reply as Alex Hales found the boundary with regularity. However, once the opener was dismissed Eoin Morgan’s men began to unravel.

Sunil Narine and Carlos Brathwaite put the clamps on the home side and were able to dismiss England well short of their target.

Morgan and his side now have to bounce back in the one-day series. England have been resurgent in their 50-over form since their dramatic failure in the 2015 World Cup.

They had won six out of their last seven ODI series entering the Champions Trophy, only to be knocked out in the semi-finals by Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the West Indies’ form in the 50-over format was not even good enough to qualify for the tournament.

Both teams will have a point to prove in the series and we’ll now break down their prospects with the latest betting odds.

England’s Top Batsman

Hales can shine for England

Hales was impressive in the T20 at the Emirates Riverside, blasting 43 off just 16 deliveries. He was on pace to register England’s fastest half-century in the shortest format of the game. However, his dismissal brought about the Three Lions’ demise when he missed a straight ball from Brathwaite.

The manner of his performance was intriguing to watch. Hales is one of the most destructive batsmen in the world when in full flow. The 28-year-old was reaching that level, blasting the ball to the boundary with relative ease. He appeared to enjoy the pace of the Windies’ bowlers, although he did lose his wicket to a slight deviation off the pitch.

Having Hales at the peak of his powers at the top of the innings is a good sign for England. He was the key man when Morgan’s men broke the world record for the highest ODI score. Against Pakistan he was downright fearsome on his way to notching a career-high ODI knock of 171, breaking England’s highest individual score in the process.

The Nottinghamshire batsman has been touted for a place in the Ashes squad. Leading the way in the ODI series with a number of fine innings could be enough to send him Down Under. Backing the 28-year-old at odds of 3.50Bet €100 to win €3505/2Bet £100 to win £350+250Bet $100 to win $3502.50Bet HK$100 to win HK$3502.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp350-0.4000Bet RM100 to win RM350  with William Hill to top score for England will be a solid option.

Competition could come from Jonny Bairstow at the top of the order. The Yorkshireman has been picked ahead of Jason Roy to partner Hales opening the innings. He will be desperate to solidify his place in the team and build form ahead of the Ashes in the winter.

West Indies’s Top Batsman

Lewis was not present for the Test series, but he hit the ground running in the T20 with a blistering knock. He along with Gayle at the top of the innings smashed around England’s opening bowlers.

The 25-year-old notched his half-century in 26 deliveries and Lewis appeared to be on course for a third century in the shortest format. However, he was dismissed going for one big shot to many, being caught by Joe Root off the bowling of Liam Plunkett.

Lewis has not had the success in ODIs as he has enjoyed in the T20s. He has a ODI century under his belt made against Sri Lanka last year, but in his other 16 innings he has failed to pass 50. His inconsistency will be a concern for Jason Holder’s men heading into the series.

One of the aspects of his play that will need to be monitored over of the course of the series is his patience. Lewis will have more time to build an innings from the top of the order. Whether he has the nous to stop himself from going all out in the early overs will determine his success.

England had success against the 25-year-old in the series in the West Indies. In the three matches Lewis made a combined 29 runs, including 21 in the opener. The talent is there therefore he’s an intriguing bet at odds of 4.50Bet €100 to win €4507/2Bet £100 to win £450+350Bet $100 to win $4503.50Bet HK$100 to win HK$4503.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp450-0.2857Bet RM100 to win RM450  with Coral.

England’s Top Bowler

Plunkett has been on the spot in 2017

Plunkett has been a reliable bowler for England in limited-overs cricket. After making an impact as a youngster his career looked to heading on a downwards trajectory. However, he has found his form to become a regular in the ODIs and T20, offering a threat with his pace and bounce.

He took three wickets to stem the tide at the Emirates Riverside, removing Marlon Samuels, Keiron Pollard and Lewis. The 32-year-old’s consistency over the last year has been very impressive, with Morgan often going to the senior bowler to break partnerships.

Plunkett has a good record against the West Indies, taking 10 wickets in the three-match series earlier this year. The pace bowler plies his trade in the middle overs where he has formed a strong tandem with Adil Rashid. The two Yorkshire players have been key cogs in England’s recent success in the 50-over format.

The 32-year-old has had a good year for the Three Lions and will be desperate to end the campaign on a high note. The West Indies are an aggressive team and will be challenging the boundary with regularity. That will open up chances for catches in the deep, which has been one of Plunkett’s strengths – getting men out on the rope.

Therefore backing him at odds of at 4.50Bet €100 to win €4507/2Bet £100 to win £450+350Bet $100 to win $4503.50Bet HK$100 to win HK$4503.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp450-0.2857Bet RM100 to win RM450 with Bet365 presents good value for him to lead the wicket column.

Winner

England whitewashed the West Indies in the Caribbean earlier this year. Expect Morgan’s men to continue the theme, despite the return of Gayle, Samuels and Pollard into the fold.

The Three Lions have a stronger batting unit and quality in their bowling attack. Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali missed the T20 after being rested. They will return to action to provide the balance that England lacked in their defeat.

The Windies have promising talent, including Shai Hope. However, in English conditions late in September, the odds are stacked too heavily in the home side’s favour.

Backing Morgan’s side at odds of 1.33Bet €100 to win €13333/100Bet £100 to win £133-303Bet $100 to win $1330.33Bet HK$100 to win HK$133-3.03Bet Rp100 to win Rp1330.3300Bet RM100 to win RM133  with SkyBet to win the series is the option to take, while 6.50Bet €100 to win €65011/2Bet £100 to win £650+550Bet $100 to win $6505.50Bet HK$100 to win HK$6505.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp650-0.1818Bet RM100 to win RM650  for another clean sweep should also be considered.
