1.20 Newbury – Mr Top Hat

Maiden races are interesting affairs. There is often a significant mix when it comes to ability in the field, and with some of the participants never having seen a racecourse before, it can be tricky for some bettors to decipher which horses represent value. However, seasoned bettors with a good handle of form and perhaps more importantly, a solid grasp of breeding and trainer behaviour can make a profit from these sorts of races. Maidens are some of our favourite contests here at SBO Racing and we have a cracking each-way bet in the first race at Newbury. The horse in question is the David Evans trained Mr Top Hat. The son of Helmet (nice word play), has run twice and has shown plenty of promise. His veteran trainer has given the horse 102 days off the track and perhaps the juvenile has been waiting for the slightly softer underfoot conditions than he encountered during the height of summer. Mr Top Hat made his debut at Newbury back in May and ran as was expected (went off at odds of 51.00Bet €100 to win €510050/1Bet £100 to win £5100+5000Bet $100 to win $510050.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$510050.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp5100-0.0200Bet RM100 to win RM5100 ). That race was quite hot and although out the back, the horse displayed that he wasn’t completely devoid of ability, recording an RPR of 56. Came back at Windsor a month later and again went off at a huge price, but ran an absolute corker, staying on to finish a close up second. That was a big jump forward in form, and there is potential for the horse to go forward again now he has been given more time to strengthen up. Windsor is a sharp 6 furlongs and the horse was doing his best work late, so a switch to a more galloping track is likely to play into the horse’s hands.

The favourite Buffer Zone is worth an honourable mention, and although he doesn’t have the bare form of our selection, there was plenty of promise in the debut run of the son of Bated Breath and he could well go forward.

1.50 Newbury – Beshaayir

It is bet in a maiden day here, and the second selection is the William Haggas trained Beshaayir. This well bred type is clearly held in high regard at the Haggas stable and he went off as favourite for a race over today’s course and distance. He came within a nose of justifying that market support back in August, and should go one better today.

Beshaayir has two Group entries towards the back end of this season which is indicative of how the horse has been working at home. He knew his job well enough on debut and was only just outbattled by a horse with racecourse experience from the John Gosden yard. Natural progression and the benefit of experience should see Beshaayir dismantle a field which has a number of newcomers, but no other horses who have run with serious form.
