England To Triumph In Third ODI At Bristol

September 22, 2017

The second ODI between England and the West Indies was a washout at Trent Bridge as only 14 deliveries were bowled.

The Three Lions had made a bright start to the contest as they racked up 21 runs in the 2.2 overs bowled. Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales flashed a couple of boundaries before the rain came to force the fixture to be abandoned.

It’s as you were after the opening match of the series. England won that contest comfortably and will now attempt to build on their success at Bristol in the third ODI.

As a result of their defeat at Old Trafford, the Windies now have to go through qualifying matches to reach the 2019 World Cup.

Jason Holder’s men will be desperate to prove a point by bouncing back from their defeat. However, Chris Gayle suffered an injury in the opener and was removed from the side for the contest at Nottingham.

The 38-year-old faces a fitness battle to regain his fitness for the third clash of the series. England should remain unchanged, although they could rotate their bowling attack allowing Jake Ball or Tom Curran to come into the fold.

We’ll now break down the contest at Bristol, using the latest betting odds.

Root is always on form for England

Bairstow continued to look in great touch at the start of his innings at Trent Bridge. He would have been desperate for more time in the middle given the quality of his knock at Old Trafford. The 27-year-old looks in imperious form with the bat and it would no surprise to see him rack up the run at Bristol.

However, the perils of opening the innings can leave Bairstow and Hales vulnerable to receiving good deliveries, especially in conditions found in September. As a result, it could be worth backing Joe Root instead of the openers. He has slight more protection arriving at number three in the order.

The 26-year-old’s form has not suffered from assuming the Test captaincy. He was in fine knick throughout the summer and continued his series of fine performances with a half-century. Root expressed his frustration that he was unable to see out the innings with Bairstow.

Dismissals after scoring 50 have become Root’s problem, although it’s not a terrible issue to endure. His conversion rate in Test matches is poor, with a slight improvement in the ODI format.

There are just two months before the Ashes begin in Australia and Root will be desperate to maximise time at the crease. He looked excellent at Old Trafford and expect him to continue to rack up the runs in the contest at Bristol.

Root has played two matches at Bristol, scoring 60 runs without being dismissed. Back the 26-year-old at odds of 4.50Bet €100 to win €4507/2Bet £100 to win £450+350Bet $100 to win $4503.50Bet HK$100 to win HK$4503.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp450-0.2857Bet RM100 to win RM450  with SkyBet to continue his form at the ground by leading the Three Lions in the run column.

Gayle was fortunate to escape a cheap dismissal in the opening match of the series. He edged Chris Woakes’ delivery to Root at slip, only for the Yorkshireman to drop the ball.

The 38-year-old laid into the England bowlers, making 37 off 24 deliveries before he was caught by Root going to one big hit too many. Gayle’s power at the crease remains unmatched in world cricket, despite his advancing years.

His exploits in the middle appeared to take strain on his body as he suffered his injury during the innings. However, the opener should be ready to return to action at Bristol where he will be aiming to send his side off to another blistering start.

Gayle has always fared well against England in all forms of the game. He averaged 43.16 against the Three Lions, scoring two centuries and five fifties in his 26 innings. His last hundred against England did come 11 years ago in the Champions Trophy in a losing effort in Ahmedabad.

As a result, the 38-year-old is due a big knock against Eoin Morgan’s men and may eye the boundaries at Bristol to get his side on track in the series. He has decent odds to lead the run column in the contest at 4.00Bet €100 to win €4003/1Bet £100 to win £400+300Bet $100 to win $4003.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$4003.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp400-0.3333Bet RM100 to win RM400  with William Hill.

Plunkett aims to bounce back

Liam Plunkett has been the Three Lions’ best ODI bowler this season. He has not been heralded for his work, but has become a valuable contributor. Only two players in world cricket have taken more wickets than the 32-year-old in ODIs this season.

Plunkett has stated his desire to end 2017 as the leading wicket-taker in the 50-over format. He played well against the Windies on the side of his hometown club Durham. The pace bowler took three wickets in the T20 clash, although he failed to take a strike in the ODI opener.

The 32-year-old has been plying his trade in the middle overs in a solid partnership with Adil Rashid. His pace and variations have allowed him to strike with regularity over the course of the season. Plunkett has dragged his average down into the low 30s and boasts a solid strike rate of 32.2.

The Yorkshire bowler has a good record against the Windies, taking his wickets at an average of 19.31. He took 10 wickets in England’s whitewash win over Holder’s men earlier in the year in the Caribbean, highlighting his threat against the tourists’ batting unit.

Back Plunkett at odds of 4.75Bet €100 to win €47515/4Bet £100 to win £475+375Bet $100 to win $4753.75Bet HK$100 to win HK$4753.75Bet Rp100 to win Rp475-0.2667Bet RM100 to win RM475  with Bet365 to lead the wicket column for Morgan’s men.

Winner

England have been on form in the ODI game throughout the calendar year, including their comfortable win in the Caribbean. Their victory in the opener proved that the Windies will struggle to match their quality in the series.

The Three Lions’ batting line-up is too deep for Holder’s side to handle with their limited bowling attack. Although Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis can strike the runs at a rapid rate, there’s not enough power in the rest of the line-up to put up enough runs on the board to stop the home team.

Therefore back England at odds of 1.28Bet €100 to win €1287/25Bet £100 to win £128-357Bet $100 to win $1280.28Bet HK$100 to win HK$128-3.57Bet Rp100 to win Rp1280.2800Bet RM100 to win RM128  with Marathon Bet to claim the win at Bristol.
