England To Wrap Up ODI Series At The Oval

England crushed the West Indies in the third one-day international at Bristol to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Moeen Ali was the star of the show for the Three Lions. The 30-year-old blasted a century off just 53 balls – the second fastest by an Englishman – which guided his side to insurmountable total of 369.

The Windies attempted to respond through Chris Gayle, who blasted the England bowlers around the ground. However, once he was removed the tourists’ innings collapsed to a 124-run defeat.

Liam Plunkett did the damage with the ball for the home side. He continued his impressive year with a five-wicket haul, tearing through the Windies’ middle order.

Top West Indies Batsman

Gayle was in prime form at Bristol as he took apart the England attack. The 38-year-old looked poised to notch his 23^rd one-day century, but was run out six runs short of the milestone. His striking has been impressive since arriving for the limited-overs part of the tour.

However, this could well be his last action in England and he will be determined to bow out with another century to his name. Gayle has taken apart the Three Lions’ opening bowlers, but has looked troubled in the middle overs. His inability to run between the wickets could be an issue at The Oval given the size of the ground.

Even the 38-year-old cannot hit boundaries with every ball of his innings. Therefore it could be set for a player such as Shai Hope to lead the run column. The 25-year-old was outstanding in the Test series, especially at Headingley in his record-breaking match.

He has not been able to kick on during the ODI series, making 55 runs in his two innings. The onus will not be on striking big hits at The Oval, which will give him the opportunity to nudge the ball around the ground. Chris Woakes has not found his form since returning to the fold from injury. He had become England’s premier bowler in the 50-over format, but has struggled to find his rhythm.

With the Ashes in eight weeks, the 28-year-old will be keen to get back to his best. Woakes should be pencilled in for the start at Brisbane, but time in the middle is in short supply ahead of the series.

Therefore it will be important for him to get into the wicket column. Facing Gayle and Lewis at the top of the innings is not bad form of preparation. He should be able to find movement off the pitch and will be afforded some protection by the bigger boundaries at The Oval.

It’s an important match for Woakes to prove his fitness and his quality for the challenges ahead. He is more than capable of running through the Windies’ top order. Plunkett and Rashid are the form bowlers and will attempt to rack up the wickets once again for Morgan’s men in the middle overs.
