Chiefs To Keep Rolling Against Redskins

September 30, 2017

The Kansas City Chiefs will aim to extend their unbeaten start to the 2017 season when they host the Washington Redskins.

Andy Reid’s men have enjoyed an excellent start to their campaign, winning all three of their contests.

They’ve beaten the New England Patriots, the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Chargers thus far in a comfortable manner.

The breakout star of the early stages of the campaign has been rookie Kareem Hunt. Since fumbling on his first carry of his career, the back has been simply sensational.

Quarterback Alex Smith has proven that he is more than capable of leading the club towards the Super Bowl. The Chiefs traded up to select Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 Draft, putting Smith on notice that the franchise were looking to the future.

However, the 33-year-old has responded with an excellent start to the term. The Redskins will have to be alert defensively to stop the quarterback and his potent offense.

Washington proved their playoff credentials with a fine win over the Oakland Raiders last time out.

Their defense held Derek Carr and company in check for the majority of the contest. The offense moved the ball with ease to the endzone, with Kirk Cousins leading the way for his team.

Jay Gruden’s men had a poor start to the campaign in their loss to the Eagles. However, they’ve rebounded well to move to 2-1 and a win over the Chiefs would announce themselves as contenders in the NFC Conference.

We’ll now break down both sides before looking at the best value betting odds for the contest.

Kansas City Chiefs

Hunt has been outstanding

The Chiefs’ impressive start has been built around the form of their offense. Reid and his staff would have feared the worst when lead running back Spencer Ware was ruled out for the term. However, his understudy Hunt was been nothing of sensational since his debut.

The 22-year-old had 246 yards against the Patriots in their opener, scoring three touchdowns. He backed up that effort with a two-touchdown display against the Eagles. Hunt scored just the one against the Chargers, but had 178 yards on the ground alone, highlighting his playmaking ability.

Hunt’s performances have eased the pressure on Smith to throw downfield due to his explosive nature out of the backfield. The back has 401 yards to his name already and could be on course to win Rookie of the Year award, with a 1,000-yard campaign.

Smith has still done his part, throwing for seven touchdowns along with 774 yards. He is matching the pace of the leading contenders for MVP due to the quality of his performances. The 33-year-old has remained error-free, while bringing his receivers into the game with throws downfield.

The challenge now for the quarterback is to maintain his standard of performances. Teams will continue to challenge him to throw further downfield. With Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce his side have the talent to expose teams through the air along with their game through Hunt.

Defensively Justin Houston, Chris Jones and Marcus Peters have been outstanding. Without All-Pro Eric Berry in the secondary, the Chiefs needed more from their other defensive stars and thus far they’ve risen to the occasion. The pass-rush has been impressive and will need to remain at that high standard against the Redskins and their passing attack.

The Redskins had a poor start to the season losing to a divisional rival in the NFC East. However, the club have bounced back well, defeating the Los Angeles Rams and the Raiders.

Many would have fancied Oakland to secure a comfortable win over Washington on the road. Gruden’s side did not allow to happen as they dictated the terms of the game from the off.

Touchdowns from Chris Thompson, Vernon Davis and Josh Doctson put the Redskins in command. From that point the Raiders were unable to mount a comeback as the home side’s defense was allowed to tee off on quarterback Carr, producing two interceptions.

The prospect of maintaining that form will be the challenge for Gruden and his staff. The Redskins have been up and down during his tenure and he will be desperate for his team to shed that image.

Cousins returned to the form of the 2016 season when he passed for almost 5,000 yards. He completed 25 of his 30 passes in the victory for 365 yards and three touchdowns. Without the presence of a dominant running game the performances of the 29-year-old will be vital.

Thompson has been a great safety valve for the quarterback, catching passes out of the backfield. The back has the ability to take almost every catch to the house and already has four touchdowns to his name this term.

He will continue to be a vital player in the offense – as will Doctson who flashed the talent last week that saw the club use their first-round pick in the 2016 Draft on his services.

Defensively, Preston Smith and Ryan Kerrigan have been dominant rushing the passer thus far. However, the playoff fortunes of the club rest on the shoulders of Cousins.

Betting Options

The Chiefs have made a dominant start to the season, but the Redskins proved that they will be no pushovers in the contest.

Washington have the weapons to open up Kansas City’s secondary, exposing the void left by Berry’s absence.

The fitness of Jordan Reed could be an important factor, with the tight end questionable for the contest. If he plays he could be the threat over the middle that allows the Redskins to have success against the Chiefs’ defense.

Houston and Jones will be determined to make life tough for Cousins. If the Chiefs can build a lead it will allow their two pass-rushers to attack with freedom which could swing the match in their favour.

Smith and his offense will hold the key to the contest. They have not been stymied yet this season, with Hunt, Hill and Kelce all playing at a high level. However, should the Redskins emulate their display from their win over the Raiders it could be an interesting contest.

However, Kansas City are extremely potent at home – therefore back them at odds of 1.36Bet €100 to win €1369/25Bet £100 to win £136-278Bet $100 to win $1360.36Bet HK$100 to win HK$136-2.78Bet Rp100 to win Rp1360.3600Bet RM100 to win RM136  with Bovada sportsbook. Kelce was quiet in the Chiefs’ victory over the Chargers. Expect him to come out firing at odds of 2.40Bet €100 to win €2407/5Bet £100 to win £240+140Bet $100 to win $2401.40Bet HK$100 to win HK$2401.40Bet Rp100 to win Rp240-0.7143Bet RM100 to win RM240  with Betfair to score a touchdown anytime.

This could be a high-scoring affair and it would not be a surprise to see the Redskins score over 24 points.
