Oldman Could be Short Odds by Academy Awards Night

October 30, 2017

Gary Oldman is favourite to win the Oscar for Best Actor.

The 90th Academy Awards will not take place until Sunday 4 March but there is no time to waste in securing a backable price about Gary Oldman winning the Best Actor in a Leading Role category for his performance in Darkest Hour.

Favourites for major Academy Awards races can start the gala event at prohibitive odds and the Best Actor in a Leading Role contest is shaping like one of those events in which the result is a fait accompli by the time that the stars have walked the Dolby Theatre red carpet. So do not get hung up on Oldman already being odds-on at around 1.70Bet €100 to win €1707/10Bet £100 to win £170-143Bet $100 to win $1700.70Bet HK$100 to win HK$170-1.43Bet Rp100 to win Rp1700.7000Bet RM100 to win RM170  to break his Academy Awards duck because he is likely to shorten much more. Oldman plays Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour and everyone knows how much the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences love transformations, particularly when thespians portray famous figures. In Darkest Hour, Oldman plays Churchill in his early days as British prime minister as Adolf Hitler closes in on the United Kingdom during World War II. Darkest Hour has been screened at selected film festivals ahead of its American release in November and British release in December. Oldman is receiving great reviews with many critics rating his Churchill as the best ever, which is no small claim given the number of times that the British politician has been depicted in movies.

According to Academy Awards pundits, the current Best Actor in a Leading Role race is one of the weakest in recent times so Oldman does not much to beat in order to break through for his first Oscar. Set to receive his second Academy Awards nomination after making the 84th Oscars field for his work in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Oldman is likely to find himself on the same Best Actor in a Leading Role ballot paper as the likes of Daniel Day-Lewis, Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal, Timothee Chalamet and Steve Carell. Day-Lewis has won three Academy Awards from five nominations so he is hardly due another one and the same goes for two-time Oscars recipients Hanks and Washington. One rates Gyllenhaal as the biggest Best Actor in a Leading Role threat to Oldman but the American does not have the same body of work as the Briton and, therefore, the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are likely to make him wait for Academy Awards glory. Chalamet would become the youngest Best Actor in a Leading Role champion in decades if he topped the Academy Awards poll, while Carell does not have the gravitas to defeat Oldman.

Oldman is a fan of the Academy Awards but he is on record as having no time whatsoever for the Golden Globe Awards, which – rightly or wrongly – are one of the main precursors to the Oscars. This is what Oldman said to Playboy reporter David Hochman when asked about the Golden Globe Awards: “It’s a meaningless event. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is kidding you that something’s happening. They’re fucking ridiculous. There’s nothing going on at all. It’s 90 nobodies having a wank. Everybody’s getting drunk, and everybody’s sucking up to everybody. Boycott the fucking thing. Just say we’re not going to play this silly game with you anymore. The Oscars are different.” With Oldman leading the Best Actor in a Leading Role race – for example, all 24 GoldDerby experts have him as their top pick – it will be extremely interesting to see if the Hollywood Foreign Press Association snubs him and, if not, whether the performer bothers to turn up the pre-Academy Awards event.
