Cowboys Will Defeat Chiefs After Elliott Boost

November 3, 2017

The Dallas Cowboys were facing a tough test without Ezekiel Elliott against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. However, the running back’s suspension that had been reinstated in the court system, has been granted a stay of one week.

Jason Garrett’s men have improved to 4-3 following a convincing victory over the Washington Redskins last time out. Elliott ran all over the Redskins’ defense for 150 yards and two touchdowns, highlighting his value to the club.

Without the presence of Elliott for the next six weeks, Dallas would have turned to Alfred Morris. With Elliott back in the line-up, the Cowboys can now run their preferred offense for a crucial game in the season.

Kansas City got back to winning ways with a win over the Denver Broncos on Monday. The Chiefs had lost back-to-back matches against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Oakland Raiders. However, they were handed a gift, capitalising on five turnovers to secure a comfortable win on home soil.

Alex Smith has maintained his elite form and could be on course to challenge for the MVP award. Kareem Hunt has not been an explosive in the last few weeks, but relief has come in the form of plays downfield from Travis Kelce.

It should be a thrilling contest between two solid outfits. The Cowboys are looking to make a surge in the NFC East, while the Chiefs will be looking to seize on their loss.

We’ll now break down the two sides and look at the latest betting odds for the match.

Dallas Cowboys

Morris has to step up in Elliott's absence

Elliott’s legal team have managed to buy time to stave off the suspension for as long as possible. The 22-year-old overcame a slow start to the campaign and has rounded back into his 2016 form.

He was crucial in delivering a win over the Redskins last time out. As options begin to run out to stop his eventual suspension he will aim to sign off on the highest of notes against Kansas City.

Alfred Morris, who has ability in the backfield, will be waiting in the wings to take over and it may not be a bad option for the club to get him up to speed. The back has 105 yards on 13 carries – that workload will increase over the next six weeks to match Elliott’s start to the term.

The 28-year-old did notch three-straight seasons over 1,000 rushing yards with the Redskins. He has a nose for the endzone with 31 touchdowns in his six seasons, including two for the Cowboys in the last campaign.

Kansas City have been vulnerable against the run, so there will be ample opportunities for Morris and Elliott. Prescott will have to increase his workload in the coming weeks and he will have to find his peak form throwing downfield. The quarterback has averaged 25 attempts over the past two matches and that may have to edge into the 30s. He has been accurate in the pocket, throwing 14 touchdowns to four interceptions.

Prescott needs to connect with Dez Bryant and his wideouts with regularity, taking advantage of the single coverage they will get from the Chiefs.

Defensively, DeMarcus Lawrence has been outstanding, leading the NFL with 10.5 sacks this season. He has been unblockable and his performances have opened up room for his team-mates to capitalise. Tyrone Crawford and David Irving have also been in the backfield, taking the strain of the club’s depleted secondary.

Dallas will need their defensive line to maintain their excellence on Sunday.

The Chiefs rounded back into form with a fine win over the Broncos. Their perfect start to the season took a hit with defeats to the Steelers and Raiders knocking them off course. However, they were able to feast on turnovers against Denver to secure a 29-19 win.

Smith maintained his excellence as he connected with Kelce to devastating effect. He still has not thrown an interception this term and has 16 touchdowns to his name, highlighting his credentials for MVP. The 33-year-old was not as accurate in the win over the Broncos, but Smith will not defenses of that quality every week.

The deep ball has added a new dimension to the club’s offense. Tyreek Hill and Kelce have been almost unstoppable and the Chiefs will need them to rise to the occasion once again against the Cowboys.

Hunt had a perfect start to his career, but has been slowed over the past three weeks. Denver limited him to just 46 yards, while he was also ineffective in receiving game. With the power of Dallas’ pass-rush, he will have to find his form to help his side secure a road win.

Defensively, the Chiefs have been up and down in their opening eight matches. They’ve allowed a lot of yards and given up a lot of points, but the performances of their offense have mitigated their issues. Marcus Peters has established himself as one of the elite cornerbacks in the NFL, notching three interceptions this season.

Justin Houston has been a force on the defensive line, while Chris Jones is also beginning to emerge in the middle. However, the rest of the defense without the presence of Eric Berry has been below-par. An improvement is needed to secure the number one seed in the AFC Conference.

Betting Options

The Cowboys have found a rhythm since their bye week, defeating the San Francisco 49ers and the Redskins. Elliott’s presence is  massive boost for the club after it looked as though he would be ruled out of the contest.  He could inspire a winning effort to take advantage of Kansas City’s weaknesses on defense.

The battle in the game will come between the Cowboys’ defense and the Chiefs’ offense. Lawrence could provide enough pressure off the edge to disrupt Smith – therefore the Cowboys may be able to win a high-scoring contest.
