Jaguars To Keep Playoff Surge Going Against Chargers

November 10, 2017

The Jacksonville Jaguars have been up and down this season, but over the past two matches the club have rounded into form with back-to-back victories.

The Jaguars boast the strongest defense in the NFL, dominating on the defensive line with 35 sacks on the term thus far. The secondary has emerging stars, including Jalen Ramsey, who was involved in a melee with AJ Green last week.

Doug Marrone’s men have to maintain their form to keep the pressure on the Tennessee Titans in the AFC South. The Jags are currently second in the division and are holding down the fifth seed in the AFC Conference.

Jacksonville will be eyeing a playoff home game at the least in their push to end their post-season drought. There is talent to sustain the charge, but the Los Angeles Chargers cannot afford to be taken lightly.

The Chargers are entering the last chance saloon in their playoff push. They kept themselves alive against the New England Patriots last time out due to impressive defensive play. However, Philip Rivers and the offense failed to save the club.

They have the quality on both sides of the ball to match the Jaguars in the contest, but will need a strong outing to overcome the stoic defense on the road.

We’ll now break down both teams’ seasons so far and use the latest betting odds to back a winner on Sunday.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Ramsey has been outstanding

The Jaguars have been one of the surprise packages of the term. The club have not competed in the playoffs since 2007, but now have a great opportunity to end their drought sitting at 5-3.

Due to their struggles over the last few seasons, they’ve managed to collect a great deal of talent at the top of the draft. Those players are beginning to emerge into stars, none more so than Ramsey, who has developed into an elite cornerback.

Ramsey locked down one of the leading wideouts in the NFL last week, frustrating Green so much so he lashed out. The 22-year-old leads a secondary that is the best unit in the league against the pass, notching 10 interceptions on the season.

The pass-rush has played a significant role in their success. Calais Campbell leads the NFL in sacks, with 11 quarterback takedowns on the year. Dante Fowler Jr, Yannick Ngakoue and Malik Jackson have also been a force on the line, making life almost impossible for opposing quarterbacks.

The performances of the defense has eased the pressure on Bortles. He was renowned for his mistakes during his first three seasons in the NFL. However, Bortles has limited his errors this term, throwing 10 touchdowns to five interceptions.

Bortles played his best game of the season last week in the Jaguars’ comfortable win over the Bengals. The 25-year-old just needs to maintain that level for the club to continue their push to the playoffs.

Leonard Fournette should return to the line-up after missing last week due to injury. He has been outstanding in his rookie term, with 596 yards on the campaign. Against a weak Chargers run defense, Fournette could be in line for a big day.

The Chargers are in a desperate battle to keep themselves in the playoff hunt. They could have moved back to .500 by beating the Patriots last time out, only to succumb to a limp defeat.

As a result, the club are now 3-5 in their term, with another defeat against an AFC opponent surely putting a death knell in their post-season hopes. Anthony Lynn’s men have to turn the corner by producing a special display against a solid team on the road.

Rivers had a decent outing against the Patriots last time out, but in the clutch he was picked off by Jonathan Jones, confirming his side’s loss. The Chargers comitted two costly penalties on offense, both by wideout Tyrell Williams that took 12 points off the board. They cannot afford to keep making those errors, especially from experienced players.

The Chargers’ offense needs to improve their level of production, although Melvin Gordon reeled off an 87-yard touchdown run last time out. There’s enough talent on the offensive side of the ball to put points on the board. However, they need a complete performance from all their offensive players to overcome a stoic unit.

Defensively, Los Angeles have to stop the running prowess of Fournette. They’ve been one of the worst units against the rush and allowed the Patriots to take the game away from them using the ground game.

Their defense needs to keep the Jaguars in long situations on second and third down. That will allow Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram to tee off against Bortles and the Jags’ offensive line. The duo can match the destructive nature of Campbell and company on the other sideline, but need the support of their team-mates to make a match-winning effort.

Betting Options

The Jaguars have the ability to shut down the Chargers’ offense, with their lockdown secondary limiting Rivers’ and his wideouts. Gordon did have an 87-yard touchdown against the Patriots, but he was held relatively in check other than his huge run at the start of the game. The contest should play into the hands of the Jaguars on home soil. They boast one of the strongest running backs in the NFL in the form of Fournette. The 22-year-old has reeled off 596 yards this season and he could be in line for another big day on the ground against a weak run defense.
