Away Days are the Way Forward in Championship

There are some good bets on the road in the Championship on Saturday and Sunday, so it’s an away day special for us in England’s second tier this weekend.

Wolves continue to confound expectations and are sitting pretty at the top of the table – promotion looking more and more likely with every passing week. They’ve beaten Norwich and Fulham by two goals to nil in the last two games, and are now two points clear of second-placed Sheffield United. The Blades play on Friday night and could briefly go top of the table, but Wolves are strongly fancied to retain top spot if that does happen by beating Reading on Saturday afternoon.

Middlesbrough were many people’s favourites to win the league at the start of the season but they had a muddling start. Things have started to improve recently for Boro’s expensively assembled squad, and they’re up to 5th place after three wins on the spin. On Sunday they travel to a Leeds side which has dropped like a stone down the table after losing seven of the last eight matches.

Another away tip can be found when Barnsley travel to Norfolk to play a Norwich side that has lost its last three games, and which has failed to win at home since early September. The Tykes are actually below the Canaries in the table, but have only lost once in seven games and have claimed two impressive away wins in the last three on the road.

Reading v Wolves

A surprise away defeat to QPR followed Wanderers’ impressive 0-0 draw at Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, but they bounced back in perfect style to beat both Norwich and Fulham 2-0 in subsequent games. They are now 10 points ahead of 7th placed Derby so a play off place is a very realistic target, but automatic promotion is the ultimate goal. Wolves have the best away record in the entire division with five wins from eight games rewarding their band of travelling fans.

After qualifying for last season’s play offs Reading are having a much less impressive season this time around and are wallowing in 18th place in the league. Their home record is particularly poor as they have managed to win just two of their seven matches in front of their own fans. They have managed to win the last two against Nottingham Forest and Derby, but prior to that had lost four from five – including home defeats to Middlesbrough and Norwich.

Norwich v Barnsley

The Canaries had a mini-revival throughout September and early October, but have lost three on the trot after claiming a great draw at Arsenal in the Carabao Cup. Norwich have only won two of eight games at Carrow Road this season and their last win at their Norfolk home came back on the 9th of September when they beat Birmingham 1-0. Burton, Bristol City and Hull have all taken a point at Norwich in recent weeks, while Wolves and Derby walked away with all three in the last two games there.

Barnsley are 16th – three places below Norwich in the league – but they’ve lost just one game in the last seven and have won on two of their last three away trips. They took three points from Burton and Millwall with a 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday in-between.

Leeds v Middlesbrough

Boro are up to 5th in the table and closing in on the top two. Anything less than promotion will probably be seen as a disappointment for a side aiming to bounce straight back up, especially after some big investments in playing staff over the summer. Garry Monk is a very good manager at this level and his side are on a run of three wins in a row after beating Hull, Reading and Sunderland.

Leeds are in a real rut at the moment after losing seven of the last eight, conceding 17 goals in the process. That run has seen them drop to tenth in the table after a good early start to the season. Reading, Sheffield United and Derby have taken three points from the last three games at Elland Road, and Middlesbrough are fancied to pile on the pressure on Sunday.
