Eagles Will Roll Past Ailing Cowboys In NFC East Contest

November 17, 2017

The Dallas Cowboys host the Philadelphia Eagles in a crunch clash in the NFC East at AT&T Stadium on Sunday Night Football.

The Cowboys were hammered last week by the Atlanta Falcons on the road. Jason Garrett’s men entered the contest on the back of a three-game winning streak. However, an injury to left tackle Tyron Smith loomed large as his replacement Chaz Green allowed six sacks.

Dallas put only seven points on the board as they struggled to fire without the suspended Ezekiel Elliott. The 22-year-old is sidelined for a further five matches – so the Cowboys must decipher a way to get their offense moving without the All-Pro.

Garrett’s men dropped to 5-4 in their season and are now in desperation stakes in their bid to catch the Eagles at the top of the division. If Dallas have any hope of securing a bye in the NFC Conference race they cannot afford to lose another match this term.

The pressure will be on Dak Prescott to rise to the occasion against the Eagles. It will be a battle of two of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL as Carson Wentz will look to continue his outstanding form. The 24-year-old returns to action fresh off the bye week following their drubbing of the Denver Broncos in week nine of the season.

The Eagles’ offense has been electric in their last three matches, including breaking the 50-point mark against the Broncos. With Wentz operating at the peak of his powers, Doug Pederson’s men can take a serious stride in taking control of the NFC.

We’ll now break down the two sides’ seasons and look at the best value betting odds for the contest.

Dallas Cowboys

Lawrence has to be at his best

The Cowboys failed to cope with the absences of two of their best players last week. Elliott finally lost the battle against his suspension in court and missed his first game of the term. Alfred Morris fared well enough in relief of the All-Pro, but due to the nature of the contest – his action was limited.

The bigger loss for Dallas was Smith’s absence due to injury. The 26-year-old has been one of the elite left tackles in the NFL since being drafted by the club in 2011. It was only the fifth game he missed of his career and was a death knell for the Cowboys on the road. Green attempted to fill in, but was dominated by Falcons defensive end Adrian Clayborn. Clayborn had a career day, notching six sacks, falling just short of the NFL single-game record.

As a result of Green’s dire display, Prescott and the Dallas’ offense were unable to get into a rhythm to match the scoring prowess of Matt Ryan and the Falcons. The Cowboys put forward their worst display of the term on offense and are in dire need of a response against the Eagles.

Smith will not return, while Green has been benched. Byron Bell will take over the left-tackle duties, facing off against the best unit of pass-rushers in the NFL. Unless Garrett and his coaching staff can scheme their way out of trouble – it could be another long afternoon for Prescott in the pocket.

Demarcus Lawrence continued his excellent form, taking his tally to 11.5 sacks on the term. He will need to have a dominant display to stop Wentz and his offense rolling once again. The Eagles have a lot of weapons, which will test the Cowboys’ ability to match them in the secondary.

Philadelphia Eagles

Wentz is in the running for MVP

The Eagles have established themselves as the dominant side in the NFC. Pederson’s men hold form at the top of the Conference after nine matches and have shown no signs of slowing down. They’ve been beaten just once this term, which came back in week two at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs. Since then Wentz and company have reeled off seven wins on the bounce and are eyeing their eighth that would take them on the verge of wrapping up the NFC East.

Philadelphia have not won the division since 2013 and it would mark a major step in the development of the franchise. The Eagles took a major risk by trading up to draft Wentz second overall in 2016, but it has paid dividends. The 24-year-old is becoming one of the elite quarterbacks in the NFL and Wentz is rightfully a candidate for the MVP award. He has thrown for a league-leading 23 touchdowns to only five interceptions.

Jay Ajayi made an impact in his first game since being acquired from the Miami Dolphins. A strong running game will ease the pressure on Wentz down the stretch. LeGarrette Blount and Ajayi have the power to kill off games in the fourth quarter. The Eagles are well set across their offense to continue their march towards the one seed, beginning by defeating their rivals.

Philadelphia’s defensive line has been downright fearsome this season. The depth of talent has allowed them to rotate and punish opposing quarterbacks. Injuries at linebacker and in the secondary could haunt them down the line, but the speed of their pass-rush should atone for any lapses in coverage. Expect them to have another strong outing against the weakened Cowboys’ offensive line.

Betting Options

The Eagles have been rolling this season and are only getting better as Wentz continues to grow in confidence. Dallas were boosted by a fine win over the Chiefs in week nine, but came crashing down to earth by losing last time out to the Falcons. The losses of Elliott and Smith loomed large and will do so again – which should allow the Eagles to ease to a comfortable victory on the road.
