Napoli to Take Out Must Win Champions League Game

November 20, 2017

Napoli are on the brink of going out of the Champions League.

The Champions League is back on Tuesday night and with just two games to go in the group stages, it’s do-or-die for several teams. One side which has few worries is Tottenham who travel to Dortmund in the knowledge that they have already qualified for the knockout phase. The same applies to Manchester City who are at home to Feyenoord, but Liverpool face a much tougher test away at Sevilla.

Dortmund v Spurs could be a great match for the neutral but it is passed over from a betting perspective. Spurs are already through and will almost certainly be joined by Real Madrid, meaning that Dortmund are only really in a battle to claim third place and a Europa League slot. After two consecutive defeats to Manchester United and Arsenal, it would be no great surprise to see Mauricio Pochettino rest some players ahead of the weekend games and the German side have much more to play for.

One game which very much appeals is Napoli’s home tie versus Shakhtar Donetsk. The Italian club are in the last chance saloon as they need to win both of their final two games to draw level with the Ukranian side and usurp them for second place behind Manchester City. Beating Shakhtar on Tuesday night would give them a lifeline going into the final match of the group in two weeks’ time.

Liverpool and Sevilla are probably battling it out for first or second place in group E, although Spartak Moscow could challenge if results fall their way. The Reds face the Russian side at Anfield in the final group game though, so even if they were to lose in Seville they ought to still progress.

Group G has an upside-down look to it, with favourites to go through – Monaco and Leipzig – currently occupying third and fourth. They meet in France on Tuesday night where only the victor is likely to have a good chance of snatching the top spots from Besiktas or Porto.

Napoli v Shakhtar Donetsk

Despite being fairly short odds, Napoli are a good thing to claim victory on home soil against Shakhtar at 1.44Bet €100 to win €14411/25Bet £100 to win £144-227Bet $100 to win $1440.44Bet HK$100 to win HK$144-2.27Bet Rp100 to win Rp1440.4400Bet RM100 to win RM144  with Bet365 in a game they simply must win.

The Naples side started the campaign with much promise but back-to-back defeats to Manchester City along with their earlier defeat away at Shakhtar have left them on the brink of going out. If they win this they will be three points adrift of the Ukranian side, but Shakhtar travel to City in the final match while Napoli visit Feyenoord.

They warmed up for this with a 2-1 win over AC Milan in serie A over the weekend, and apart from the 4-2 defeat to Pep Guardiola’s City, they’ve won 15 and drawn 3 of the last 18 home games across all competitions. We would expect them to spend most of the game on the front foot, and on the circumstances they should be gunning for the win.

Shakhtar won in Feyenoord but lost 2-0 away at Man City earlier in the competition, and also suffered a surprise defeat over the weekend to Oleksandriya. They are a rapid counter-attacking side and could easily cause problems on the break, but Napoli are taken to outscore them and set up a tense night in two weeks for the final group matches.

Sevilla v Liverpool

Liverpool have bounced back to form with four straight victories, but they might come unstuck against a Sevilla side which has an excellent home record. The Spaniards are 2.80Bet €100 to win €2809/5Bet £100 to win £280+180Bet $100 to win $2801.80Bet HK$100 to win HK$2801.80Bet Rp100 to win Rp280-0.5556Bet RM100 to win RM280  with 888Sport and BetVictor to win the match, and those odds are tempting enough to draw us in.

Sevilla are yet to be beaten on home soil this season and have won the last seven on the spin in front of their own fans. As things stand the Spanish club are on 7 points in the group to Liverpool’s 8, and the winner here will guarantee themselves a place in the knockout phase. Defeat for Sevilla would take their fate out of their own hands (assuming that Spartak beat Maribor), while a draw could see a three-way fight for qualification on the final match day.

Liverpool have dished out thrashings to Maribor and West Ham in recent away games, but they were humbled 4-1 away at Spurs in-between and can struggle against top-level sides on their travels. Sevilla certainly fall into that category, and the bonus for the Reds is that even if they lose, they can secure qualification with victory over Spartak at Anfield in two weeks.

Monaco v Leipzig

Monaco and Liepzig could both still reach the knockout stage, but both could also fail to even bag the consolation prize of Europa League football. That tells you how open the group is, and there is no more margin for error. Both sides need three points here to have a realistic chance of getting to the last sixteen, which suggest we could be in for an open match. Over 2.5 goals is listed at odds of 1.64Bet €100 to win €16416/25Bet £100 to win £164-156Bet $100 to win $1640.64Bet HK$100 to win HK$164-1.56Bet Rp100 to win Rp1640.6400Bet RM100 to win RM164  with Bet365.

Neither side is a stranger to high-scoring games and given the facts mentioned above, this could be quite a spectacle as the pair go toe-to-toe in search of the win. Their previous meeting only ended 1-1 in Germany, but the shackles should be off in France and at least three goals is a confident prediction.
