England To Claim Victory In Second ODI

January 18, 2018

England won their first match against Australia of their tour down under by claiming victory in the opening one-day international of the series.

Jason Roy broke the Three Lions’ record for highest ODI score – set by his team-mate Alex Hales in 2016 – with a brilliant innings of 180 to guide his side to a five-wicket triumph.

Joe Root showed no ill-effects of his stomach bug from the final Ashes Test, notching an unbeaten 91. England’s bowlers had previously limited Australia to 304, with Mark Wood, Liam Plunkett and Adil Rashid proving a point by all taking wickets. Moeen Ali enjoyed a return to form with the ball at least with a miserly 10-over spell.

Eoin Morgan will be desperate for his side to maintain their momentum in Brisbane. The Aussies did get contributions from Aaron Finch with the bat as he continued his excellent record against England. However, David Warner and Steve Smith had rare failures, with the duo aiming to bounce back in style to level the series.

Australia’s Top Batsman

Finch was outstanding in the first match of the series, scoring his ninth ODI century. The 31-year-old is renowned for his power with a range of shots around the ground. However, he was measured in his approach, knocking the ball around at a rate just below a run a ball. Finch also found the boundary, firing 10 fours and three sixes before he was removed by Ali for 109. The opener’s record against the Three Lions is dominant.

Four of his nine ODI centuries have come against Morgan’s men, while he averages 51.50 every time he steps to the crease against his team’s arch rivals. Finch has played two matches at Brisbane in his career. His last outing was a success as he made 71 against India, although his previous innings ended in a rare duck against England in 2014. Smith and Warner could be in line for bounce back matches, but Finch’s talent against the Three Lions should not be counted out. Therefore back the 31-year-old at odds of 4.00Bet €100 to win €4003/1Bet £100 to win £400+300Bet $100 to win $4003.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$4003.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp400-0.3333Bet RM100 to win RM400  with BetVictor to lead the way.

Bairstow can match Roy's knock

Roy took his game to a new level with a simply astonishing innings in the opener. He took the match by the scruff of the neck and dragged England to a dominant victory. The 27-year-old did have his moments of fortune. However, the Australia bowlers had no answer to his power and placement before he took his team to the brink of victory.

Roy smashed several records, including taking England’s highest ODI score away from Hales. It has been a hallmark of the Three Lions’ revolution in limited-overs’ cricket that they continue to break records. Both of their openers have now posted huge scores in dominant wins and Roy’s disappointment as his dismissal highlights how much the standard has been raised.

The 27-year-old was dropped following a run of poor form last summer, allowing Jonny Bairstow to come into the fold. Although Roy impressed it will be hard for him to match that effort again. Bairstow threatened to make huge scores in the Ashes and will be aiming to emulate the exploits of his opening partner. Back Bairstow to top score at odds of 4.50Bet €100 to win €4507/2Bet £100 to win £450+350Bet $100 to win $4503.50Bet HK$100 to win HK$4503.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp450-0.2857Bet RM100 to win RM450  with 888Sport.

The Aussies underwhelmed with the ball in Melbourne. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins were not quite at their best, while Adam Zampa was thrashed around the ground. The leg-spinner conceded 72 runs from his 10 overs as he failed to provide the containment that Nathan Lyon excelled at during the Test series. Starc has not seemed the same bowler as the opening three matches of the Ashes. The 27-year-old appears to be suffering the effects of his heel injury and may behove the Aussies to be careful with his fitness ahead of important matches.

Cummins had the pace, but the assault of England’s batsmen knocked him out of rhythm. Andrew Tye played well on his ODI debut, conceding just 43 runs from his 60 deliveries. That could well have been England playing him without fear due to being ahead of the rate and watching the debutant’s style. However, he could be the surprise package once again. Back him at 5.00Bet €100 to win €5004/1Bet £100 to win £500+400Bet $100 to win $5004.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$5004.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp500-0.2500Bet RM100 to win RM500  with BetVictor to lead the wicket column at the Gabba.

Wood's pace troubled the Aussies

Rashid returned to the fold after missing the Test series and displayed his prowess with ball in hand, dismissing Smith. England struggled immensely to dislodge the Aussie skipper in the Ashes and Rashid proved that he should have at least been in the squad by removing for just 23. The 29-year-old was expensive, suffering at the hands of Finch and Marcus Stoinis, but his value for England in the middle overs cannot be understated. The Three Lions’ ability to take wickets with regularity kept the Aussies in check and made the score reachable in their chase.

Plunkett and Wood also sent out a signal to the selectors. Wood produced a fiery first over to dislodge Warner, showing the pace and bounce that England sorely missed in their Ashes defeat. He has a habit of claiming crucial wickets and it would not be a surprise to see him build on his display. Winner

England look focused in the opening match of the series and used their power to secure the victory. Morgan’s men contained the Aussies, using their varied attack before Roy unleashed his onslaught. Expect them to kick on from their success and notch their second win of the series as their side looks more balanced and deeper than the Aussies.
