England To Respond From Defeat At Perth

January 27, 2018

Australia ensured that they avoided a series whitewash against England by claiming their first win of the ODI series at Adelaide.

Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood were inspirational leading their side to the victory, reducing the Three Lions to 8-5 in the opening 10 seven overs of the innings.

The tourists were bailed out by a brilliant half-century from Chris Woakes. He scored 78 off 82 deliveries, notching nine boundaries in his knock, including five sixes.

Woakes’ partnership with Tom Curran guided England to a respectable total of 196 from 44 overs, keeping their hopes of a sweep alive.

David Warner and Cameron White fell cheaply for the Aussies in their response, while Steve Smith’s struggles continued in the 50-over format being removed for four.

However, Travis Head anchored the innings with his seventh ODI half-century, only to fall four runs short of a hundred.

The Aussies put themselves under unnecessary pressure in the final throes of their chase, losing Marcus Stoinis and Pat Cummins. Tim Paine held his nerve to guide his team over the line for their three-wicket triumph.

Australia will be determined to sign off the series on a high note with another victory at Perth. We’ll now break down the contest, using the latest betting odds.

Australia’s Top Batsman

Aaron Finch missed out at Adelaide due to a hamstring injury, allowing Head to come back into the fold. The 27-year-old failed in the opening two matches of the series and was consequently dropped. He returned to the Big Bash with the Adelaide Strikers and found form with an innings of 58. Head was able to channel that performance into the ODI arena to guide his side to victory. The left-hander and Woakes were the only two players to get to drips with a testing surface.

Head was not explosive, although he found the boundary 15 times to notch his 96 runs. He went for a big shot to get him to the century, only to blast the ball straight at Morgan to miss out on the landmark. Head may need another good knock at the crease to retain his place in the side for the future. If Finch comes back into the fold he may have to drop down to number three to displace Cameron White. The 27-year-old is still in the best position to influence the match – therefore back him at odds of 4.75Bet €100 to win €47515/4Bet £100 to win £475+375Bet $100 to win $4753.75Bet HK$100 to win HK$4753.75Bet Rp100 to win Rp475-0.2667Bet RM100 to win RM475  with Betway to lead the way once again.

Hales needs a good performance

England’s top order was dismantled by Cummins and Hazlewood effectively ending the game inside the seventh over. It would have taken a special effort to pull off the victory, which was almost provided by Woakes as he continued his excellent form with the bat. However, the Three Lions were about 30 runs short of a competitive total, although the Aussies almost collapsed. Alex Hales’ form is a concern for England. The 29-year-old might not have been part of the team had Ben Stokes been fit and he has hardly endeared himself to the selectors at number three.

Other than a half-century in Brisbane in the second ODI – he has made single figures in the other three matches. The England team has tough competition for places and Hales will be wary looking over his shoulder at emerging players in the county game. He is one of the senior figures at 29 in the side and an influx of further youth could put his place under pressure. Therefore he needs a score at Perth where the quick wicket will suit his batting. Back him at odds of 5.00Bet €100 to win €5004/1Bet £100 to win £500+400Bet $100 to win $5004.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$5004.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp500-0.2500Bet RM100 to win RM500  with 888Sport to top score in the fifth ODI.

Cummins rose to the occasion in the absence of Mitchell Starc. He took the new ball to devastate the England top order. The 24-year-old finished his 10 overs with career-best figures of four wickets for just 24 runs. It has been an impressive few months for the seamer as claimed the most wickets in the Ashes, despite not enjoying the publicity of Starc and Hazlewood.

He has quietly gone about his business and was a particular foil of Root. Cummins dismissed him once again at Adelaide, with Hazlewood snagging a top edge down at fine leg to leave the tourists rocking. Cummins has had time to establish himself after a career plagued by injury.

The way he has responded to those setbacks has proved a lot about his character. The 24-year-old also bounced back from Jos Buttler’s late surge in the third ODI to rip through the Three Lions. He will be keen to end the series on a high note – as a result back him at odds of 4.00Bet €100 to win €4003/1Bet £100 to win £400+300Bet $100 to win $4003.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$4003.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp400-0.3333Bet RM100 to win RM400  with Betway to lead the wicket column.

Woakes can shine with the ball

Woakes saved England’s blushes with his fine effort with the bat, scoring his second half-century of the series. However, his primary usage in the team is his bowling and he’s not been firing on all cylinders on the tour, including the Ashes where he struggled to find his rhythm.

The 28-year-old has claimed five wickets in the four matches and notched the key scalp of Warner early on in Adelaide. For Morgan’s men to be an elite outfit they need more from their bowlers at the start of the innings. He and Wood have not been providing great impetus, heaping pressure on Adil Rashid and Liam Plunkett in the middle overs.

The duo have been solid enough drying up the runs, but adding wickets will make England almost unstoppable. Woakes had one of his worst days in ODI cricket on his last outing at Perth in 2015, being smashed around the ground for 89 runs from his 10 overs. It would be fitting for him to respond to lead England to victory with a dominant spell of bowling at odds of 3.75Bet €100 to win €37511/4Bet £100 to win £375+275Bet $100 to win $3752.75Bet HK$100 to win HK$3752.75Bet Rp100 to win Rp375-0.3636Bet RM100 to win RM375 with Betway.

Winner

England were doomed by their atrocious batting in the opening seven overs of the game. Australia bowled well, but the Three Lions have to learn to adapt their attacking instincts when the conditions favour the bowling unit. It was their downfall in the ICC Champions Trophy last year and ended their hopes of securing a whitewash victory down under.

Morgan was furious by his side’s effort, although they almost pulled the game out of the bag due to Australia’s batting issues. Expect England to bounce back to secure their fourth win of the series at odds of 2.10Bet €100 to win €21011/10Bet £100 to win £210+110Bet $100 to win $2101.10Bet HK$100 to win HK$2101.10Bet Rp100 to win Rp210-0.9091Bet RM100 to win RM210  with BetVictor.
