England To Respond From Defeat At Perth

Australia ensured that they avoided a series whitewash against England by claiming their first win of the ODI series at Adelaide.

Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood were inspirational leading their side to the victory, reducing the Three Lions to 8-5 in the opening 10 seven overs of the innings.

The tourists were bailed out by a brilliant half-century from Chris Woakes. He scored 78 off 82 deliveries, notching nine boundaries in his knock, including five sixes.

England’s Top Batsman

England’s top order was dismantled by Cummins and Hazlewood effectively ending the game inside the seventh over. It would have taken a special effort to pull off the victory, which was almost provided by Woakes as he continued his excellent form with the bat. However, the Three Lions were about 30 runs short of a competitive total, although the Aussies almost collapsed. Alex Hales’ form is a concern for England. The 29-year-old might not have been part of the team had Ben Stokes been fit and he has hardly endeared himself to the selectors at number three.

Other than a half-century in Brisbane in the second ODI – he has made single figures in the other three matches. The England team has tough competition for places and Hales will be wary looking over his shoulder at emerging players in the county game. Australia’s Top Bowler

Cummins rose to the occasion in the absence of Mitchell Starc. He took the new ball to devastate the England top order. The 24-year-old finished his 10 overs with career-best figures of four wickets for just 24 runs. It has been an impressive few months for the seamer as claimed the most wickets in the Ashes, despite not enjoying the publicity of Starc and Hazlewood.

He has quietly gone about his business and was a particular foil of Root. Cummins dismissed him once again at Adelaide, with Hazlewood snagging a top edge down at fine leg to leave the tourists rocking. Cummins has had time to establish himself after a career plagued by injury.

Woakes saved England’s blushes with his fine effort with the bat, scoring his second half-century of the series. However, his primary usage in the team is his bowling and he’s not been firing on all cylinders on the tour, including the Ashes where he struggled to find his rhythm.

For Morgan’s men to be an elite outfit they need more from their bowlers at the start of the innings. The duo have been solid enough drying up the runs, but adding wickets will make England almost unstoppable. England were doomed by their atrocious batting in the opening seven overs of the game.
