Can The Patriots Win Their Second-Straight Super Bowl?

The New England Patriots can win their sixth Super Bowl by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles at US Bank Stadium on Sunday.

Bill Belichick’s side have won the crown in two of the last three seasons. They have the opportunity to win the Vince Lombardi trophy in three out of four terms and secure back-to-back titles for the second time under his tenure.

Coincidentally the last time the Patriots achieved the feat of back-to-back crowns was by beating the Eagles in the 2004 campaign. Only Tom Brady remains from that team and he will be aiming to further enhance his legacy with another special performance on the big stage.

The 40-year-old produced yet another fine performance to deliver his team into the Super Bowl. He drove his team back from a 10-point deficit against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Championship game. Brady connected twice with Danny Amendola in the endzone to reach the final game of the season for the eighth time in his career.

Brady will be the driving force behind the Patriots’ surge, although New England’s defense will have a part to play. They made key plays in the club’s last two Super Bowl victories. It would not be a surprise to see them involved in another dramatic moment.

How The Patriots Can Win Super Bowl LII

It all starts with Brady. The 40-year-old is more than capable of putting up 40 points on any defense he faces in the NFL. He has the weapons at his disposal now that Rob Gronkowski has cleared concussion protocol and will start Super Bowl LII. If the quarterback is given time in the pocket, he will be able to dissect the Eagles’ defense. The strength of Philadelphia’s unit is their pass-rush. Should they be able to generate a consistent pass-rush to knock Brady out of rhythm there will be hope. The Falcons managed to slow down Brady last year in Houston. However, once Brady found his form he did not look back and led the incredible 25-point comeback.

The Patriots will have a plan in place to attack the weak links in the secondary and linebacking corps. Between Brandin Cooks, Chris Hogan and Danny Amendola – there are sufficient weapons to expose the Eagles’ cornerbacks. However, the biggest threat will come from Gronkowski, James White and Dion Lewis in the passing game. Philadelphia have struggled to contain tight ends down the middle of the field. Lewis and White are two of the most elusive backs in the NFL and will be relishing the occasion.

Defensively the Patriots have made the crucial plays when it has mattered the most in their last two Super Bowls. Whether it was Malcolm Butler’s goalline interception, Don’t’a Hightower’s strip-sack of Matt Ryan or Trey Flowers’ takedown of Ryan to knock the Falcons out of field-goal range. They’ve delivered in clutch moments. The unit have started to generate pressure and that will be key once again. Nick Foles made impressive throws in the NFC title game, but New England will aim to confuse the quarterback using different looks.

How The Patriots Can Lose Super Bowl LII

The Patriots have lost two Super Bowls under Belichick and with Brady at quarterback. Both came at the hands of the New York Giants and the formula was exactly the same in 2007 and 2011. New England’s offensive line gave up pressure with ease in 2007, costing them the perfect season. Brady was knocked around and sacked five times in the contest. Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Michael Strahan, Antonio Pierce and Barry Cofield were a constant presence in the backfield. Umenyiora, Tuck were at it again four years later, this time assisted by Jason Pierre-Paul and Linval Joseph. The Eagles have enough quality on their defensive line to provide the same issues.

Generating pressure with four players and dropping seven into coverage has worked before. Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is one of the best in the business – do not rule him out of doing something interesting and outside the box to disrupt Brady’s rhythm. New England got into their hole against Atlanta as their receivers could not break free of man coverage until the third quarter. Gronkowski is the great equaliser against that system, but with the Eagles’ pass-rushers they cannot afford to fall behind.

The difference between winning and losing for New England has been the play of their defense on the big stage. In 2014 and 2016 the unit got the stops when they needed to. Whereas in 2007 and 2011 they failed to stop Eli Manning albeit with the misfortune of two incredible catches. They will need to stop Foles’ from throwing downfield and connecting with his go-to receivers. If they allow him to find a rhythm and build confidence throughout the contest – he has enough quality to pull off the victory.
