Reed Eyeing Green Jacket After Masters Second Round

Patrick Reed has put forward a strong claim for The Masters title with a brilliant performance in the opening two days of the competition.

The American leads the field heading into the weekend, which sees many of the world’s elite within striking distance of the 27-year-old. However, if Reed maintains his level of fort, it will be difficult for anyone to prise the Green Jacket away from come Sunday.

The American has put himself in a commanding position to win his first major, sitting two strokes ahead of his nearest rival Marc Leishman after the second day. Marc Leishman

Leishman has put himself into contention with two impressive outing, which have put on course to at least better his best finish of fourth at Augusta in 2013. The Australian lost out in a playoff in 2015 in The Open, and will be aiming to capitalise on his form to secure his first major this weekend. He had a flawless start to the tournament and was one of the few that appeared to be keeping pace with Spieth at the top of the leaderboard. The Australian responded to Spieth’s struggles in the early stages of the second day. Leishman reeled off three birdies in a row to take the lead on the front nine. An error on the 14^th checked his momentum with a bogey, only for the 34-year-old to rally with a brilliant eagle on the following hole. Henrik Stenson

The 2016 Open champion is well within striking distance after two solid opening rounds at Augusta. Stenson has not made an impression at The Masters before, despite his pedigree. The Swede had a flawless opening nine holes in his first round, netting birdies at the fourth and seventh. Problems arose after the turn after further birdies at the 11^th and 13^th as his momentum was stymied by a bogey on the 14^th. He recovered on the 15^th with his fifth birdie, although day one ended on a low note with a bogey on the final hole.

Stenson started his second round with confidence with a birdie at the second, although again he was held back by a bogey on the fourth. Jordan Spieth

The 24-year-old was at his imperious best in the opening round of the competition. He had a steady start, notching two early birdies, only to be checked by bogeys at the fifth and seventh. Spieth’s response was emphatic, producing a brilliant effort on the eighth to knock home an eagle. At the turn he was two-under, although his charge was coming down the stretch. Spieth reeled off five birdies on the bounce between the 13^th and 17^th, only to stifle his momentum on the final hole with his third bogey of the day, although he still boasted a commanding lead in the clubhouse at six-under.

His second round could not have started worse with a double-bogey on the first and a bogey on the second. The American had immediately sacrificed his lead, while another bogey on the seventh knocked him down to two-under. Spieth’s powers of recovery were on full display on the back nine, with a clean effort. The 24-year-old was on the spot with the putter to notch birdies at the 13^th and 15^th, although he missed a good opportunity to move to five-under, with a wide putt on the last. Rory McIlroy

The four-time major winner has played within himself in the opening two days of the competition, providing himself with a strong platform for the final two rounds. McIlroy has often been accused of being overly aggressive in his approach, but he has maintained his discipline to limit his mistakes at Augusta. The Northern Irishman began The Masters with a birdie on the first hole, but dropped back to even-par with a bogey before birdieing the eighth on the front nine on day nine. He was flawless after the turn, notching two further birdies to end with a round of 69.

Like Spieth he got off to a poor start on day two, bogeying the first hole. McIlroy responded with back-to-back birdies, but two bogeys in three holes knocked him off the pace. The 28-year-old was able to mount a recovery on the back nine, birdieing at 13 and 14, while life could have been better for him, although he missed opportunities on the 16^th and 18^th.
