Where Will Mayfield Land In The 2018 NFL Draft?

Baker Mayfield is one of the most intriguing prospects in the 2018 NFL Draft. The quarterback was a standout for three seasons at the Oklahoma Sooners in the college game.

His production on the field was extremely impressive, throwing 119 touchdowns and only 21 interceptions in his time with the team.

However, Mayfield’s behaviour off-the-field has come under the spotlight, with an arrest for public intoxication tarnishing his reputation.

The 23-year-old has been earned remarks stating his similarities to former Cleveland Browns quarterback Jonny Manziel, who washed out of the NFL just two seasons in his career.

He has proven quality on the field and has spoken well about his issues in the evaluation process. Mayfield may not have done enough to move into the conversation as one of the top three quarterbacks, but due to the demand for talent at the positon he could move into the top-10.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins sit in striking distance of the top-10 in the Draft, sitting in the 11^th spot. Their situation is interesting given Ryan Tannehill’s injury problems. Tannehill was selected by Miami in the first round of the 2012 Draft, but has not quite managed to elevate the standard of his performances to make the club into a contender. His 2016 term was encouraging, but he tore his ACL to rule him out of the post-season before suffering a reoccurrence of the injury to miss the 2017 campaign entirely.

As a result, Adam Gase’s men will not know what to expect from the 29-year-old when he returns to the field. Mayfield could provide the spark needed to allow the Dolphins to challenge in the AFC East. The New England Patriots have dominated the division since 2001, with Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.

Miami have enjoyed brief moments of success, but only one division crown which came when Brady missed the 2008 campaign. Mayfield has the characteristics and traits to trouble the Patriots, who have struggled against mobile quarterbacks in the past. Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals have a starting quarterback in place, but could follow the example of the Kansas City Chiefs by selecting his heir apparent. Andy Dalton has been solid if unspectacular since joining the club as a second-round pick in the 2011 Draft. The 30-year-old has had his moments, but has not delivered on the big stage to end the club’s drought post-season win drought. Marvin Lewis managed to survive another underwhelming campaign, although he may need to make a dramatic change to secure his position for another term.

Mayfield could be the answer to give the Bengals athleticism and a talisman at the quarterback position. Cincinnati have not been the most dynamic of sides in Lewis’ time at the club. Therefore a change in philosophy could be the ticket to success, pairing Mayfield with Joe Mixon and Giovani Bernard in the backfield. There’s enough talent in the receiving corps featuring AJ Green, Tyler Boyd and Tyler Eifert to aid the quarterback in his development. Mayfield would have the opportunity to sit for a season like Patrick Mahomes did behind an experienced signal-caller before being called on. However, at 21 they may have to trade up to acquire the 23-year-old.

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens have fallen into a decline since their Super Bowl win in the 2012 season. Quarterback Joe Flacco was outstanding down the stretch during that run, earning a massive contract on the back of his success. Unfortunately for John Harbaugh’s men, the 31-year-old has not lived up to the terms of his deal, which has impacted the club elsewhere on their roster.

There’s pressure starting to build on both Harbaugh and Flacco after the Ravens failed to reach the playoffs for the third season on the bounce. Flacco’s play has been uninspiring to say the least, although he has not been helped by the quality around him. However, selecting Mayfield could be the answer to jolt Baltimore’s insipid offense into life. He has the ability to make plays anywhere on the field and get the best out of average players in the receiving corps.

The Ravens have missed with a lot of their recent picks in the first round and cannot afford to continue their drafting struggles, notably wide receiver Breshad Perriman. As a result, they may opt for a safer selection than Mayfield.

Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals have a need at quarterback, despite signing Sam Bradford to a one-year deal. Bradford started the last campaign at Minnesota, but played just one match before being ruled out for the term. Arizona lost Carson Palmer to retirement, stressing the need for a veteran. However, with Bradford on their roster the NFC West outfit need to address the future. The Cardinals are in an intriguing spot at number 16 in the first round.

They could easily move up to snag Mayfield should he fall out of the top-10. Whether they would shift is another matter, with a few holes on their roster. Steve Keim is one of a number of general managers under pressure to deliver results, especially given the competitive nature of the NFC West.

It appears that the Cardinals have missed their Super Bowl window, although a move for Mayfield could re-ignite their charge, pairing him with All-Pro running back David Johnson. Their need for a future quality starter at quarterback could drive them to select Mayfield, whose skill set combined with Johnson’s would give a lot of defensive coordinators issues.
