Could Chubb Drop Below The Top Five In 2018 NFL Draft?

April 23, 2018

Bradley Chubb has established himself as one of the elite defensive prospects available in the 2018 NFL Draft due to his outstanding level of production for the NC State Wolfpack.

The 21-year-old barely played in his freshman season, but began to make progress as a sophomore. By the time of his junior year, Chubb has developed into a fearsome pass-rusher along with being stout against the running game. He totalled 21 tackles for a loss along with 10 sacks for his team. He matched that level of production in his senior campaign, refining the arts of his game.

As a result, the defensive end has been touted as a top-five pick in the 2018 Draft. The question lies where he will fall in the selection process, with several quarterback-needy teams in place at the top of the Draft. His talent has been comparable to Myles Garrett, who was selected with the first-overall pick in the 2017 Draft, which could hand one team a steal should he fall out of the top-five.

Chubb has odds of 1.80Bet €100 to win €1804/5Bet £100 to win £180-125Bet $100 to win $1800.80Bet HK$100 to win HK$180-1.25Bet Rp100 to win Rp1800.8000Bet RM100 to win RM180  to fall below the fourth pick with 888Sport. However, his potential should give all sides in striking distance of the top-10 pause for thought. We look at the sides that could be in the market for the defensive end.

Chubb is an elite prospect

Cleveland Browns

The Browns could have the possibility of being able to select Chubb twice. Having picked Garrett with the first-overall pick last year, Cleveland can perhaps not justify using it once again on a defensive end. The club have a great need at the quarterback position and cannot afford to allow a potential star to slip through their grasp. Cleveland have been searching for a solution to their quarterback problem since returning to the NFL in 1999. With four quality potential options available, general manager John Dorsey will have to use the first pick on a quarterback.

That leaves Chubb open for the New York Giants and the New York Jets to pounce. They both have quarterback needs as well, therefore Chubb could fall to the Browns at number four. Dorsey faces a massive decision on the future of the club whether to add a bookend his defensive line. A tandem of Garrett and Chubb could wreak havoc on opposing offenses for a decade. However, Saquon Barkley may also remain on the board and is a generational talent at running back. It will be fascinating to watch the decision unfold as it may have huge ramifications for the future of the franchise.

New York Giants

The Giants may have dropped a hint of their intentions in the 2018 Draft by trading away Jason Pierre-Paul. The defensive end had been an instrumental part of their team that won Super Bowl XLVI against the New England Patriots. Pierre-Paul was a staple of the club’s defensive line for eight seasons, but general manager Dave Gettleman made the decision to part ways with the 29-year-old. His departure leaves a void at the defensive end position, with little depth behind Olivier Vernon.

Chubb would fit into the Giants’ system and would start from day one on James Bettcher’s defense. However, New York’s need for a quarterback of the future may force their hand away from Chubb. Eli Manning’s performances have shown signs of decline over the past two years. As a result, Gettleman cannot afford to select an elite prospect with the second-overall pick at the position where quality is so hard to find. It’s a difficult choice due to Chubb’s performances in his college career along with the rave reviews he has earned during the evaluation. However, quarterback trumps all in the NFL.

New York Jets

The Jets moved up three spots in the Draft to take their place at number three in the order. The consensus is that they shifted in order to acquire a franchise quarterback. New York did sign Teddy Bridgewater to a one-year contract and he has proven pedigree in the NFL, while veteran Josh McCown remains on the roster. However, the opportunity to get a signal-caller with elite potential is an opportunity that the Jets cannot pass up. They have endured similar struggles to Browns at the position, with numerous failed draft picks invested in an attempt to find a solution.

General manager Mike MacCagnan cannot afford to make a costly error with the selection given the capital the club used to manoeuvre themselves into the third spot. Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield could all be available therefore it makes sense for them to target the quarterback position.

Chubb could come into play if the Jets’ top two targets are out of contention. Elite pass-rushers are just as hard to find, while their defensive line has taken a hit over the past year with the departures of Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson. Chubb would provide an instant improvement on a defense that features a lot of young talent. When playing Tom Brady twice a season it should always come into the equation.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos hold a position of power in the Draft. Denver could select a quarterback themselves, although they already have Case Keenum and Paxton Lynch on their roster. It would not be a surprise to see them trade back to acquire further picks and bolster their team that has been hit by several key departures. Alternatively, they could remain and attempt to rebuild their championship-calibre defense. Von Miller was the driving force behind their triumph in Super Bowl, leading a dominant unit to victory over the Carolina Panthers.

The Broncos had a perfect complement with Miller and veteran DeMarcus Ware on the opposite side of the line. General manager John Elway could emulate that by drafting Chubb. Denver proved that teams do not need a quarterback playing at an elite level to win the Vince Lombardi trophy. Selecting Chubb would once again give them the most dominant pass-rushing group in the NFL, which could be the formula to take them back to the Super Bowl. Chubb’s landing spot could be in Colorado to learn under one of the league’s modern-day greats.
