Top Five Contenders For The US Open

The second major of the 2017/18 PGA Tour begins on Thursday with the start of the US Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York.

Brooks Koepka won the event at Erin Hills last season and will aim to join an elite company of competitors to have won the tournament.

The usual suspects of Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy will also be vying for the title.

Patrick Reed produced a stunning performance at The Masters to win his first major. He will also be in contention in New York in an attempt to build off his fine display to secure the Green Jacket.

Dustin Johnson

Johnson returned to number one in the world with a victory at the St. Jude Classic, walking off with an eagle on the final hole. The triumph was his second of the term following his previous win at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. The American was at the peak of his powers and now has momentum to enter the US Open.

Johnson won the US Open in 2016, securing his first major title after failing to get over the line in the final round of previous tournament. It appeared at the time Johnson would kick on and add further crowns to his name. However, he has been unable to add a major title to his collection, including an underwhelming performance at The Masters this season.

The power and placement of his game was sensational at the St. Jude Classic, blowing away the rest of the field by six strokes. In this sort of form Johnson is more than capable of matching his exploits in New York, although he will have to handle the occasion. It has been a mental block for the 33-year-old in the past and it will be up to him to prove himself to justify his world ranking once again. Justin Rose

Rose has been in impressive form throughout the season and has seemingly been in contention in almost every tournament. The 37-year-old is also a former champion at the US Open, winning the event in 2013 to make his breakthrough on the major stage. Rose has come close to adding further crowns, but has failed to get over the line.

The Englishman has missed the cut at the US Open in the past two seasons, although he has been solid at the other events, including a 12^th-place finish in The Masters this term. Rose began the current campaign with a victory at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions, producing a fine performance on the final round to win the title. In 11 events on the tour this term, he has finished in the top 10 on six occasions, highlighting his consistency.

Rose won the Fort Worth Invitational at the end of May, with four flawless rounds on the course. He finished sixth in his last outing at the Memorial Tournament, which should provide a decent platform for the 37-year-old to take into the competition. Rory McIlroy

The Northern Irishman has endured almost four years of frustration since his last success in the majors. His last triumph came in 2014 at the PGA Championship, with the 29-year-old failing to produce his best form since then as he has had issues maintaining his quality.

McIlroy has threatened since, finishing in the top 10 on seven occasions. However, he has been unable to make the necessary surge to break his drought. McIlroy did engineer a potential charge at this year’s Masters, but once again his game fell apart on the final round, allowing Reed to ease to the title.

McIlroy has been up-and-down over the course of the current term. He put forward a fine performance to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but he could not use that momentum at The Masters. Since then he was solid at the Wells Fargo Championship and the Memorial Tournament, although he missed the cut at the Players Championship. Jordan Spieth

Spieth is always a contender for the crown and is another player that has history at the US Open. The 24-year-old won the event in 2015 after previously triumphing at The Masters. Spieth was at the top of the golfing world, and although he has added another crown to his name at The Open in 2017, the American has not enjoyed the same dominance that his early form suggested.

At the peak of his powers there are few that can match his exploits on the course. His performance on the final day of The Masters was a joy to behold as he made a serious charge to reel in Reed, although his effort were in vain. Since then his form has tailed off, failing to fire at The Players Championship, AT&T Byron Nelson, Fort Worth Invitational, while he missed the cut at the Memorial Tournament. Patrick Cantlay

Cantlay could be an outside contender for the crown. The 26-year-old has impressed on the tour this season, winning one event and notching five top-10 finishes in 14 events. Cantlay’s consistency has been impressive to watch throughout the term, although his performance at The Masters was one of his worst on the campaign. He missed the cut with a display to forget, but will be eager to bounce back in New York.

The American has momentum heading into the tournament. He reeled off impressive performances at the RBC Heritage and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans after his disappointment at Augusta. Cantlay was in contention at the Players Championship, only to fall away in the final two rounds. He missed the cut at the Fort Worth Invitational, although he was able to find his form at the Memorial Tournament by placing fourth just off the pace.
