Will Johnson Rise To The Occasion At US Open?

Four men hold a joint-lead of the US Open heading into the final round of the tournament at Shinnecock Golf Club.

Dustin Johnson saw his four-shot lead disintegrate on the third day of the competition, although he still holds a share of the lead as he attempts to win the crown for a second time.

He is joined at the top of the leaderboard by three of his compatriots. Brooks Koepka is in place to make a real challenge to win back-to-back titles at the event, although he was over-par for the day.

Daniel Berger and Tony Finau produced the two best rounds of the third round. Both players were four-under, moving into contention for their first majors.

The final day of the US Open should provide plenty of drama, although there was more than enough of it on Saturday as course conditions made lift extremely difficult for the competitors.

Dustin Johnson

Johnson was in fine form in the opening two rounds of the competition. The 33-year-old displayed the control and poise that eluded his counterparts at the top of the world rankings. He was solid on the first day of the tournament, carding a one-under round of 69. However, Johnson returned to action on Friday and put forward a fine display to notch a three-under round of 67. The American had a four-shot lead over the rest of the field at the start of Saturday, but his control of top spot quickly slipped from his grasp.

He endured a horror show on the front nine, beginning with a double-bogey on the second before dropping another shot at the fourth. Johnson’s lead evaporated between the sixth and eighth holes as he carded three bogeys on the bounce, leaving him in trouble at the turn. Brooks Koepka

Koepka finds himself in a familiar position as he vies to join an elite company of competitors to have won the competition in back-to-back years. Last season he was one shot off the lead going into the final round at Erin Hills. On this occasion he’s in a stronger position with a share of top spot, although he was not quite at his best on Saturday. The 28-year-old bounced back from a difficult first round on the opening day after carding a 75. On his second round he produced a four-under performance of 66 to move back into contention.

Koepka lost momentum on the first hole of the day with a bogey, although he quickly got the stroke back with a birdie at the second. He parred out the rest of the front nine before moving through the field courtesy of a birdie on the 11^th. However, three bogeys in the final seven holes denied him a chance to earn the outright lead. The American is playing quality golf, but will need to maintain his form on the final day. Tony Finau

Finau made the headlines at The Masters for dislocating his ankle in the par-three tournament before the main event. He still managed to put forward a decent performance at Augusta, placing in tied-10^th. However, Finau is once again in contention for a major crown as he managed to battle the conditions at Shinnecock to hold a share of the lead. The American was off the pace in the opening two days of the competition, carding rounds of 75 and 72 respectively.

However, Finau overcame a tough start on day three to surge through the field. He found bogeyed the second and third hole, but he rallied with back-to-back birdies on the fourth and fifth. After the turn, he found momentum with a fine stretch of form, reeling off three birdies on the bounce. Daniel Berger

Berger has come into contention for the crown with a fine performance on the third day of the tournament. His best finish at a major came at The Masters in 2016 when he finished tied-10^th. Winning the US Open would be the breakthrough in his career. Berger was far from his best on the opening day, carding a six-over round of 76. He had a slight improvement on Friday, dropping only one shot, although he was well off the lead. However, Berger began his charge on the third day of the competition.

He had a good start to the round by birdieing the second hole, which built a surge of momentum as further birdies followed at the fourth and sixth. Justin Rose

Rose leads the outside contenders, with the Englishman just off the pace of the leading pack by one shot. He has been consistent throughout the tournament, although he has not recorded a round under-par thus far. Rose’s performance on day three was his worst of the competition, carding a 73 compared to his 71 and 70 in the opening two days.

He made early progress with a birdie on the third hole, but he then lost his momentum with back-to-back bogeys before the turn. He made it three on the bounce at the 10^th before finding a much-needed birdie at the 15^th. However, his round ended on a low note with two late bogeys on the 16^th and the final hole.
