England To Wrap Up ODI Series At Trent Bridge

June 18, 2018

England are one game away from recording their second-straight one-day international series victory over Australia ahead of their clash at Trent Bridge.
The Three Lions claimed victory in the second contest of the series by 38 runs at Sophia Gardens as Jason Roy’s century proved to be enough to guide his side over the line.

Roy set the tone for England, who were without captain Eoin Morgan for the match after he suffered a back spasm 20 minutes before the first ball. The opener took charge and played the anchor innings that allowed the home side to put 342 on the board.

Jos Buttler continued his fine form this summer with an unbeaten innings of 91. He frustrated the Australia bowlers late in the innings, rising to the occasion in his role as stand-in skipper.

The Baggy Greens displayed fight in response as Shaun Marsh, blasted 131 in a defiant knock. However, England picked up wickets at regular intervals and were able to bowl the tourists out for 304 to win the second contest by a comfortable margin.

Morgan’s men will now be aiming to secure the series at Trent Bridge and continue to build confidence ahead of the 2019 World Cup.

Hales can shine for England

England’s Top Batsman

Almost of England’s batsmen have performed this series. Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Roy, Morgan and Buttler have registered impressive scores at the crease. The batting has been the strength of the team since the last World Cup and will be the foundation of the side heading into the tournament next year. Competition for places is rife, although there will be opportunities in the rest of the series after Ben Stokes was ruled out for the final three matches.

It’s good news for Alex Hales, who has come under pressure for his place in the team. Two years ago it would have been unthinkable for the opener to not be a part of the side. However, Bairstow’s magnificent form at the top of the order has left Hales exposed and in need for a huge score to justify his place. The 29-year-old has made decent scores in his last 10 innings, although his last century came against the West Indies in March last year.

On home soil Hales needs to find his peak form to give the selectors a real problem when Stokes is available once again. He has the quality to put the Australia attack to the sword, therefore back him at odds of 6.00Bet €100 to win €6005/1Bet £100 to win £600+500Bet $100 to win $6005.00Bet HK$100 to win HK$6005.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp600-0.2000Bet RM100 to win RM600  to Betway to lead the way at Trent Bridge.

Australia’s Top Batsman

Marsh was outstanding in Cardiff. He played a balanced innings, getting himself settled at the crease in the early stages before taking the attack to the England bowlers. Marsh seemed comfortable against both pace and spin, dispatching Mark Wood and Adil Rashid to the boundary. He didn’t have enough support at the other end to make a charge for victory. Marsh would have been frustrated that he could not see his team over the line, although he has nothing to be ashamed about regarding his display.

On the other hand, Marcus Stoinis arrived in England with a growing reputation due to his exploits in the series down under along with the Indian Premier League. Without Steve Smith and David Warner, much was expected of the 28-year-old to lead the way for the Baggy Greens. He has more than enough talent, but he has so far failed to fire for his team. Stoinis has made scores of 22 and nine in the opening two matches. Australia need a stronger effort from their middle order, starting with Stoinis. Back him to discover his best form at Trent Bridge at odds of 5.50Bet €100 to win €5509/2Bet £100 to win £550+450Bet $100 to win $5504.50Bet HK$100 to win HK$5504.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp550-0.2222Bet RM100 to win RM550  with 888Sport.

England’s Top Bowler

The middle overs have been the key for England to stifle the Australian batsmen thus far in the series. Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali have been extremely impressive in putting the clamps on the tourists, striking at regular intervals to crank up the pressure. Plunkett is becoming England’s key man with the ball and is creeping up the world rankings. His pace and nous have been a crucial factor in both wins. The 33-year-old snagged the crucial wicket of Marsh before he lash out towards the end of the innings.

He has claimed seven of the 20 Australia wickets to fall in the series and will once again by a crucial factor. Rashid has been equally important, although the tourists made a point of trying to hit him out of the attack at Sophia Gardens. The leg-spinner held his composure and was able to return to take three wickets. Rashid’s resurgence has almost been as vital as the batting in England’s revolution. He has formed good relationships with Plunkett and Ali in the middle overs. Expect that to continue in the third ODI at odds of 13/4 with Betway.

Australia’s Top Bowler

The tourists’ bowling unit has looked fairly toothless without their key pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins. Their replacements have failed to rise to the challenge, while Billy Stanlake joined them on the sidelines for the second ODI. Ashton Agar has offered no threat with his left-arm spin, putting pressure on the seamers to perform. It could force Australia to field Nathan Lyon to offer a semblance of a challenge, although it will weaken the batting line-up to withdraw Agar.

Andrew Tye posed a threat in the opening match of the series. His slower balls proved to be difficult to strike, which caught England by surprise. However, they appeared to have their eye in at Sophia Gardens, dispatching the paceman for 81 off his nine overs. He got two wickets and may get further strikes as the Three Lions hit out. Back him at odds of 3.75Bet €100 to win €37511/4Bet £100 to win £375+275Bet $100 to win $3752.75Bet HK$100 to win HK$3752.75Bet Rp100 to win Rp375-0.3636Bet RM100 to win RM375  with 888Sport to lead the wicket column.

Match Verdict

England are in complete command of the series and should have little problem brushing aside the Aussies at Trent Bridge. The Three Lions have enjoyed their matches at the venue, breaking the world record by scoring 444 two years ago against Pakistan. Australia don’t have the firepower in their batting or bowling unit to cope with the intensity. Back England at odds of 1.53Bet €100 to win €15353/100Bet £100 to win £153-189Bet $100 to win $1530.53Bet HK$100 to win HK$153-1.89Bet Rp100 to win Rp1530.5300Bet RM100 to win RM153  with Betway.
