England Line Up Australia Whitewash At Old Trafford

England will be eyeing their first whitewash of Australia when they face off in the final one-day international of their series at Old Trafford.

The Three Lions continued their imperious form by powering to six-wicket win over Tim Paine’s men at the Emirates Riverside on Thursday.

Australia won the toss and put forward a competitive total of 311 as Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh scored centuries, with the latter notching his second hundred of the series.

The Three Lions’ top order has been sensational during the series. Roy recorded his second century in four matches against Australia, with a blistering innings at Durham. Australia’s Top Batsman

Australia put forward a vintage ODI performance, which saw them slip to a defeat. Although Finch and Marsh notched centuries, they were unable to kick into the next gear to score at a rapid rate. Finch took 106 balls to reach his hundred, but was then dismissed by Mark Wood. Marsh was slightly more aggressive before falling to an outstanding piece of fielding from Roy on the boundary. Travis Head showed decent intent at the start of the innings, but he too failed to kick on.

Australia’s top order may have been fearful of losing too many wickets early on, exposing their long tail. It has been an issue throughout the series, especially with the absence of David Warner and Steve Smith. Justin Langer will need to see more from the players in the squad to prove that they are capable or raising the level of their games. It has been underwhelming so far, with only Marsh proving a point at number three in the order. England’s Top Bowler

For once England’s spinners were not able to come to the fore against Australia. The track at the Riverside was not a turning wicket therefore Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid were not quite as effective. Joe Root got through 10 overs of part-time off-spin, bowling economically to frustrate the Australia batsmen. David Willey and Wood were able to strike late, with the latter taking the crucial strikes of Finch and Marcus Stoinis. It has not been an easy ride for the seamers during the series, but they were able to improve their figures as the Baggy Greens attempted to hit out later in their innings.

It’s the one area of concern England will have ahead of the World Cup, although Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes have not played in the series, while Liam Plunkett was rested. Wood highlighted his quality with the two dismissals that prevented an Aussie surge, but he needs to produce on a more consistent basis. The Australia attack were smashed all around the ground once again by the England’s batsmen. It has been a harrowing tour for the unit without their senior men. Nathan Lyon was included in the team for the fourth match of the series, and although he took one wicket, the off-spinner did endure some of the same punishment. There has not been one man that Paine has been able to turn to for control or a threat with ball in hand.

Billy Stanlake did have a good first game, but since then he has blasted to all parts, conceding 54 runs off his eight overs.
