England To Continue Australia Dominance In T20

England completed their humiliation of Australia by securing a one-wicket win in the fifth one-day international of the series, delivering the whitewash in the process.

Jos Buttler was the star of the show as he scored an unbeaten century to guide the Three Lions over the line after an early-innings collapse threatened to thwart their attempts for the sweep.

England had bowled out the Baggy Greens for 205 within 35 overs as Moeen Ali took four wickets as the tourists struggled to maximise their opportunities in the middle.

Travis Head top scored with 56, but he once again was not able to kick on to the big score at the crease, while only D’Arcy Short and Alex Carey were able to make meaningful knocks.

The Three Lions’ batsmen have dominated the Aussie attack, although they were exposed on slower decks. Stanlake was on form at Old Trafford much like was in the first game of the series to put England under pressure. He has a stronger pedigree in the shortest format of the game therefore Eoin Morgan’s men will have to be back on their mettle. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow have been outstanding at the top of the innings, while Alex Hales has also had his moments. They could shift the order and leave Joe Root out of the 20-over side, giving further options in the bowling line-up.

Bairstow’s striking at the top of the order has been frightening at times, although he does not have a lot of experience at T20 level. England were not quite at their best in their T20 series down under, failing to reach the final against the Aussies and New Zealand. Bairstow was not part of the team for those matches so expect him to come out firing for the only T20 match against the Aussies. Australia’s Top Batsman

The Aussies have struggled immensely with the bat on tour. Only Shaun Marsh has been able to fire on a consistent basis, and although Head has passed fifty he has been unable to make the game-winning totals that his side have needed from him. Aaron Finch assumes the captaincy for the T20s from Tim Paine. Finch produced one of the most destructive innings in T20 history when he blasted 156 against England in 2013. The opener was utterly dominant as he scored his runs in just 63 deliveries, notching 11 fours and 14 sixes at the Ageas Bowl.

Other than his century at Emirates Riverside, the 31-year-old has been quiet on the tour. He was one of the players that needed to step up in the absence of Steve Smith and David Warner. There’s still time for him to rise to the occasion in the last match of the tour to save some grace for his team. England’s Top Bowler

England have been on top of Australia, with their spinners playing a crucial role in putting the tourists to the sword. Ali and Rashid have been outstanding for Morgan, providing him with a threat from both ends of the wicket. The Baggy Greens have not been able to adapt their games to attempt to put the pressure back on the duo. Ali was able to tip through their line-up with relative ease at Old Trafford to claim four wickets.

Rashid consistency over the past three years has been one of the key factors in England’s significant improvement in the shorter formats of the game. Australia’s striking has not been good enough to punish the spinners, with their failure to utilise the sweep. Expect that to continue at Edgbaston. Rashid has not been quite as effective in T20s as he has in the 50-over game, although his statistics have been trending in the right direction. When the Baggy Greens have come close to beating England on tour Stanlake has come to the fore. The 23-year-old took 2/44 in the opener to claim crucial wickets before finding his best in the final match of the series to remove Bairstow, Root and Morgan to rip through the top order. He has the potential to become a superstar for Australia, although his game still needs refinement. Stanlake has been a tad expensive, but over a shorter period he will have an opportunity to use more of his variations.

His performances in the Big Bash saw Stanlake selected by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. He fared well during his time in India therefore he will be looking to pick up where he left off in the T20 format. The 23-year-old has taken eight wickets in his six matches in his international T20 cricket, including a spell of 3/15 against New Zealand earlier this year.
